Edith Birchette Obituary

HAMPTON - Edith Lucille (Pierce) Birchette, age 87, passed away at her Florida home on Sunday, June 18, 2017. Born September 28, 1929, in Surry County, VA, she lived in New York City, moved to Hampton, VA, and visited Florida often. In New York, she worked for Parker Hannifin Corp.'s Ideal Division; afterwards, she worked as a paraprofessional for the NYC Board of Education. She leaves behind Thomas James Jr. (son), Brenda and Will Rhymes (daughter and son-in-law), Anthony Birchette (son), grandchildren (Lenwood and Wanda Turner, Shaun Birchette, Tyren Birchette, and Justin Birchette) and great-grandchildren (Ryliegh, Naeshaun, Shamir, and Simone). Services will be held at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 5405 Roanoke Ave, Newport News, VA. at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017 followed by a repast. The burial will commence afterwards at the Pierce Cemetery in Surry County, VA. Viewing will be held 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Gethsemane on Sunday, June 25, 2017. Given Edith's passion for education, in lieu of floral arrangements, the family requests that all monetary donations be given or sent to Brenda Rhymes (P.O Box 11495, Riviera Beach, FL 33419). These contributions will be donated in Edith's name to Wayne Hunt Sr.'s Scholarship Fund for six deserving graduating seniors from Newport News Public Schools. Edith's nephew, Wayne Hunt Sr., was a security officer for NNPS. Arrangements by Poole's Funeral Home.
