George Brunk Obituary

HARRISONBURG - Dr. George Rowland Brunk II, 90, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, April 21, 2002, at his residence in Park Village, 1516 Hawthorn Circle, Harrisonburg. Dr. Brunk was born on Nov. 18, 1911, in Denbigh, Va., and was a son of the late George R. and Katie Wenger Brunk. He was a graduate of Denbigh High School, Eastern Mennonite University and the College of William and Mary, and received his doctorate from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. He taught at Eastern Mennonite University and Eastern Mennonite Seminary, and served as Dean of the Seminary, 1967-1976. He was ordained to the ministry in 1934, at Warwick River Mennonite Church. He served as an evangelist in tent meetings with his wife and family across the United States and Canada, 1951-1981, and preached in many churches during his ministry. He was the founder of Warwick River Christian School in Denbigh, Va. On Sept. 20, 1933, he married Margaret Suter Brunk who preceded him in death in 1999. Surviving are his children, Gerald R. and Shirley Nafzinger Brunk, George R. and Erma Hess Brunk, Paul W. and Joyce Erb Brunk, all of Harrisonburg, Conrad G. and Christina Gerster Brunk of Victoria, British Columbia, and Barbara and Joseph A. Gascho of Hummelstown, Pa.; two sisters, Katie P. Shank and Ruth B. Stoltzfus of Harrisonburg; and one brother, Lawrence B. Brunk of Salem, Ohio. On May 12, 2001, he married Ronda W. Neer, who survives. Pastors Paul Emerson and Walter Beachy will conduct a funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday in Lehman Auditorium at Eastern Mennonite University. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee Relief Fund, P.O. Box 500, Akron, PA 17501, or to the George R. Brunk Memorial Scholarship Fund, Calvary Mennonite Fellowship, 7490 Mt. Clinton Pike, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
