George Fiske Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - George Samuel Fiske, age 94, of Williamsburg, passed away Monday, September 4, 2017. Born in Ventnor, New Jersey, he was the son of the late George W. and Mildred Johnson Fiske. He served in World War II as an army infantryman in the 100th Division from 1943 to 1946. He was wounded while fighting in France and airlifted to a hospital in England. After recovering, he joined the Army of Occupation in Germany. In 1946, he was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service. He returned to Rutgers University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. While a student at Rutgers, he met his beloved wife of nearly 67 years, Lois Jackson of Clifton, New Jersey. They were married on October 28th, 1950. George began his career at Bell Telephone and then held a number of technical sales positions before starting his own business as a manufacturer's sales representative. He lived in Basking Ridge, New Jersey for more than 25 years where he was active in several community organizations, including the YMCA and the Historical Society. He was a faithful member of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, Deacon and Trustee, and leading the design and construction of the church's Memorial Garden. George and Lois retired to Williamsburg, Virginia in 1990, where George was on the Board of the Kingspoint Club and a member of several bridge groups. He joined the Williamsburg Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and held the position of Commander from 2003 to 2008. He regularly attended the 100th Division reunions, serving as convention photographer. A loving family man, George most enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially at their annual summer beach vacations. He is survived in cherished memories by his wife, Lois Fiske of Williamsburg; his four children, Linda (Gary) Rapp of Temple, TX, Nancy Fiske (Lamont Blowe) of Plainfield, NJ, Dr. Jeffrey T. Fiske of Williamsburg, VA, and Wendy (Dan) Christian of Fairfield, CT; four grandchildren, David (Jennifer) Rapp, Emily (Jeff) Patterson, Brian and Gillian Christian; and seven great grandchildren, Wyatt, Darby and Stella Rapp, and Caleb, Ian, Mia and Shepherd Patterson. A Memorial Service will be held at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church on Monday, October 9th at 11 am. Donations in his memory may be made to Chapter 1754 Military Order of the Purple Heart, attn. T.C. Smith, 144 Killarney, Williamsburg, VA 23188.

The combat-wounded veterans of Adams-Williams Chapter 607, Military Order of the Purple Heart (Newport News, VA) mourn the death of our past chapter senior vice commander (1998-2000). George was a leader among the organized veterans of the Peninsula.
