George Suttle Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - George Suttle Jr., 84, passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 at Sentara Williamsburg Hospital.
He was born May 7, 1924 in Newport News. George joined the Army in 1943, serving in the European Theatre and later transferred to the Philippines. After returning home in 1945, he joined the family established jewelry store, originally started by his grandfather, Nasrella Suttle. Upon the retirement of George's uncles, Jack and Isor, he purchased the business and in 1972, moved from the original location, 25th and Jefferson, to Prince George Street in Williamsburg. On his retirement in 1985, the family business closed after serving the public continuously for a century.
George was a member of the Newport News Elks, the Peninsula Watchmakers and Jewelers Guild, president of the Jefferson Avenue Shopping Area, Inc. and past district and post commander of the VFW.
George was preceded in death by his father, George; mother, Louise; and brother, Charles.
He is survived by his brother, Thomas R. Suttle and wife, Dorothy; sisters, Marian S. Powell, Doris S. Kinder and husband, Ray; many nieces and nephews.
George requested his body be donated to the Virginia Anatomical Program.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newport News or your favorite charity.
Since George requested no service, family and friends are invited to the Kinder home, 106 Wilderness View, Yorktown, on Feb. 14, at 4 p.m. for fellowship. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I have such difficulty with the permanent absence of a dear friend. Since 1964 to Dec 2008 George and I had many wonderful quite meals. He sold me my house at Grand View and since he moved across the street he shared my joys in my marriage and the birth of my two children.
I'll miss you pal. God Bless you and the remaining family. God willing, I'll look you up upstairs. Rafael de Echeandia

So sorry to hear of George's death. He sold me my first watch at the Jefferson Avenue store, a Rolex that I still wear today. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family for their loss.

in 1940 George allowed me to purchase a cameo ringfor my Mother paying .50 weekly which I earned at Woolworths onm Jefferson Ave.He was a special person at that time and I understand he has been thru the years several of the girls in East End worked at the store on Fri.after school and Sat. I have the ring and wear it often and remember the childhood friend that made it possible to give my Mother a gift she cherished thru the years and I as well.Thought you may enjoy this .God Bless your family at this difficult time..
