Glenn Scott Obituary

NORFOLK - Glenn Allen Scott died on February 8th, 2016 in Norfolk, Virginia at the age of 83, ending a long, influential life. He was born in a hospital in Newport News, Virginia to Jesse J. Scott and Lillian M. Scott, and raised in Smithfield, Virginia. He grew up working at his family's business, the Smithfield Times and printing shop in the afternoons while in high school. His experience in the family business combined with his love of reading helped to develop his life-long interest in journalism. After graduating from Smithfield High School in 1950, he attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington,Virginia to major in Journalism. During his senior year, his novel, A Sound of Voices Dying, was published by E.P. Dutton. After graduating from college, he served in the United States Army for two years. He continued his military service as a Naval Reserve Intelligence Officer, retiring two decades later as a Captain. He joined the Virginian-Pilot in 1956 as acting book editor. Over his 45-year career there, he was known for his passion and wit, his eloquent writing, his courage to address controversial issues and his love of Hampton Roads. He retired from his position as associate editorial page editor in 2001. He was an active member of his community in many capacities. He served as senior warden at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, President of the Norfolk Forum, Chair of the Norfolk Bicentennial Commission, founder of the Ghent Civic League, member of the board of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, a long-time member of the Norfolk Rotary Club and several other civic boards. His editorials often had an impact on the local community as well, preserving public green space at the downtown Norfolk waterfront, supporting the development of Eastern Virginia Medical School and the Norfolk campus of Tidewater Community College, and promoting the local arts. He and his late wife, Rev. Anne C. Brower, MD, started a cultural endowment in their names at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. The fund was created to support arts and culture in Hampton Roads. Glenn is survived by his sister, Virginia Dillion and her husband, Alvin; five children, Collin B. Scott, Christopher G. Scott, and C. Bryn Scott, Glenn A. Scott, Jr. and Mary Carter R. Scott, and six grandchildren, Tyler Crumpler, Jonathan Crumpler, Selden Fiveash, Mary Charles Fiveash, Samantha Scott, and Emmett Scott. The Rev. Canon Win Lewis will lead the celebration of Glenn's life on Saturday, February 20th at 11:00 am at Christ and Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, earmarked to Scott-Brower Fund at 101 W. GLENN WAS FROM STEADFAST FRIEND SINCE 1950 WHEN WE MET AS YOUNG WRITERS IN GREENSBORO AT AN ART FESTIVAL. HE WAS NOT ONLY A FINE EDITORIAL WRITER, BUT THE AUTHOR OF A VERY GOOD FIRST NOVEL. HE WAS A COURTLY GENTLEMAN WITH A LUST FOR LIFE.

What a good fate, to take his last breath in front of the place where his heart and intellect had served his fellow man so well for half his life. I had just written a scene in my memoir, MY INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE ARMY , where Glenn suddenly appeared in my off-post garage room in fatigues with a copy of his novel, A SOUND OF VOICE DYING, having tracked me down. I stopped to try to track him down, having lost his address, to ask his written permission to quote his letters to me, even though he had given permission orally. It is a shock to discover the news story in the Pilot. We first met at an arts festival where our first stories had been published in 1951. We kept in touch every year after that. He visited me in Black mountain a few years ago. What a fine, affable, fellow. I will never forget him.

Glenn and I started at Washington and Lee University on the same day, roomed together for two years, and then began a lifelong friendship which lasted for 66 years. His wit, humor, good will, and generous spirit nourished me repeatedly.
We were there for each other in major events--marriages, birth of kids, many fun social get-togethers in both Norfolk and DC areas.
His passing leaves a real void. I miss him, but his wonderful qualities reach out into the universe and will be remembered fondly by all.

To Glenn's Family: He touched many lives throughout his life including his last years. Our church and in fact Norfolk will not be the same without him. What an honor to have known him even in a small way.

What a wonderful, thoughtful, intelligent and caring man. Norfolk, the Virginian Pilot, the Naval Reserves and the arts are so much better for having Glenn being a part of each. My condolences to his family.
