Hazel Rector Smith

NEWPORT NEWS - Hazel Rector Smith, 93, passed away Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, in Woodstock. She was a resident of Newport News for more than 66 years. Hazel graduated from Hampton High School and worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock in the tabulating department. She was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. B. "Pug" Smith; parents, James and Etta Garner Rector; and six brothers, James Rector, Fred Rector, J.B. Rector, Elvin Rector, Earl Rector and Wayne Rector. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Smith Clem and her husband, Michael Benton Clem of Edinburg; sister, Etta Rector of Chesapeake; brother, Carson Rector of Poquoson; granddaughters, Brittany Alina Clem of Stanley, Angela Kristen Clem and her husband, Jesse Griffin of New Market; and great granddaughter, Harper Lohr Griffin. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, also at the funeral home with the Rev. Chris Gourley officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
