William Lee Bracey, born on February 5, 1945, in
Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on March 2, 2026, in
Hampton, Virginia.
A dedicated and honorable man, William enjoyed a distinguished career in the United States Army, during which he traveled the world, including memorable assignments in France, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Panama, and Germany. After finishing his overseas tours, he retired from Headquarters TRADOC at Fort Monroe, Virginia. He developed a love for the base's rich history and the feeling of home that Fort Monroe provided and he continued to work there as a civilian, keeping things tidy, organized, and helping out wherever needed.
He was also a cherished member of the Chapel of the Centurion in Fort Monroe (presently known as Centurion Interdenominational Church), where he found joy and solace in singing with the choir. His voice resonated with the warmth and kindness that epitomized his relationships with family and friends. William loved the simple pleasures of life, including a good day of fishing and his lifelong enjoyment of America's favorite pastime, baseball.
William was a devoted volunteer, freely giving his time and energy to numerous organizations close to his heart. He offered his support to the USO, American Legion, VFW, and Gideons, to name a few, leaving a lasting impact on each through his unwavering commitment and genuine compassion.
William is survived by his loving wife, Yeon Sook Bracey; his beloved daughter, Mary Ann Bracey; and his siblings, Betty Gonser, and Robert Arthur Bracey, Jr., and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Fannie Bracey.
Known and remembered for his kind-hearted and giving nature, William touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
