Honor Pollok Obituary

KEY WEST, FLA. - Honor Stickney Pollok passed away on Dec. 17, 2004, in Key West, Fla., at the age of eighty. She was born in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 31, 1923. Her parents were Mary Kathryn Malcolmson Stickney, the eldest daughter of the noted architect William Malcolmson of Detroit, and Mallory Napoleon Stickney, a descendant of a founding family of the United States. Honor grew up on a farm on Pine Knob Road and went to a one room school house outside Clarkston, Mich. She enjoyed playing outdoors, camping, helping her father Mallory work the farm, and riding her horses in the fields and woodlands. During high school she played the clarinet in the band. She belonged to the 4H Club and raised prize-winning sheep. Honor graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the public schools for many years in Richmond, Williamsburg and Newport News, Va. Honor gave a place in her own home to her students at times when they needed help. Throughout her life, education was a priority, and, thanks to her, all of her children graduated from college. Following her retirement in 1977, Honor lived in Williamsburg, Va., and enjoyed gardening, crafts, and traveling in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. Beginning in 2000, she spent winters in Florida and summers in Massachusetts at the homes of her daughters. Honor was a beautiful lady with bright blue eyes, raven black hair, and a shy smile. She was a sweet and loving mother to her children, a kind spirit with great determination. Honor will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her four children, Joan Borel of Summerland Key, Fla., Mary Kathryn Afable and her husband, Andy, of Sturbridge, Mass., Mallory Pollok and his wife, Deb, of Craig, Colo., and Nick Pollok and his wife, Vivian, of Richmond, Va. Her grandchildren include Catherine Georges of Key West, Fla., Cecile Afable of Sturbridge, Mass., Alexander Pollok of Craig, Colo., and Affia Pollok, Richmond, Va. She is also survived by her sister, Janet Stickney McCord of Clarkston, Mich. A celebration of Honor's life will be held at Lapeer, Mich., on Aug. 10, 2005. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army.
