HAMPTON - Irene Boone Saunders, of Hampton VA, entered eternal rest on December 14, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 15, 1931 in Jackson, North Carolina to the late Jeter and Vergie Boone. She was educated in the Northampton County public school system and graduated from Coates High School in Seaboard, North Carolina. She was married to Roger A. Saunders, Sr. for 43 years, until his death in 1998. She was a devoted stay at home mother and wife who supported the many efforts of her husband, children and grandchildren. She loved cooking for her family and they enjoyed every meal that her loving hands prepared. Irene entered the work force after raising their children. She became a long time employee of Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, VA. She was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she worshiped until her health declined. Irene enjoyed fishing, playing bingo and traveling. She loved the numerous trips she took with her family and friends throughout her years. Ma-ma, as she was so affectionately called, believed in family, the power of love and the importance of compassion. Ma-ma's legacy was one of truth, forthrightness and loyalty to those she loved. To cherish her memory, she leaves behind, her sons, Roger Jr. (Sonya), Ralph 'Jerry' (Tanya) and Kyle, Sr. (Sarah) Saunders, a devoted and loving brother, Ralph S. Boone, along with her grandchildren and great granddaughter, whom she adored. Her surviving in-laws are Lois Boone, Justine Boone, Mary Boone, Stella Boone, Ester Boone, Eddie Futrell, Philip T. Saunders (Cherry) and Everet Jeffries. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Irene now joins in heaven, her loving husband, Roger A. Saunders, Sr., and daughter, Dr. Debra Saunders-White. She kept family memories alive in her heart always remembering sisters, Pearlene Baker and Vergie Futrell and brothers, Herman Boone, Sr., Geeter Boone, Daniel Boone, Larry Boone and George Boone (foster brother). The viewing will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th St, Newport News, VA 23607 from 12-6 pm. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 22, 2016, 12:00 pm at Antioch Baptist Church, 1563 Old Buckroe Road, Hampton, VA 23664.
