Irving Spooner Obituary

HAMPTON - Irving B. Spooner, 93, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007.
Irving was born in Riga, Latvia, and came to Newport News as a toddler. He was educated in Newport News Public Schools. He graduated from Newport News High School where he excelled in football and was awarded scholarships to several universities throughout Virginia.
Irving was an icon, a self-made man, culminating a life spanning a fulfilling and successful career. He had the blessing of a diverse and devoted family. He built their name and fortune in their salvage company, with his brother-in-law, Bernard S. Victor, for over 65 years in the same locations until recently selling Public Salvage in Hampton.
Irving had a love of classical violin music from early childhood.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia; his parents; a brother and two sisters.
Survivors include many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews throughout the United States including his niece, Bernice Victor Smith, and grand-niece, Ryan Smith of Newport News.
A graveside service will be conducted by Rabbi Norman Golner at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in The Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula, Kecoughtan Road, Hampton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to B'Nai Israel Congregation, 3116 Kecoughtan Road, Hampton, VA 23661.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I remeber buying a "used" car from Spooner's Salvage while attending W&M. My uncle spent most of the summer fixing it up for me. My regards go out to the Spooner family
