Jerome Fisher Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Jerome "Jerry" Fisher, 91, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 at Morningside of Newport News. A native of New York, he was a peninsula resident for sixty years. Jerry graduated from Hunter College, NY, was a member of the Kiwanis Club where he served as President, and was a member of Musician's Union of NY and Tidewater. He was partner with several advertising agencies, including Wright, Fisher & Paraschos, and Fisher Pyle Advertising. Jerry worked part time with Peninsula Funeral Home for 13 years. A self-employed musician for more than seventy years, Jerry played in the USO during the Korean Conflict, the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra under Carey McMurran, the Hampton Lions Jug Band, and several other combos and trios, both locally and across the United States. His fondest memories of playing were the years spent with his local trio, including the late Ed D'Alfonso, and the late Joey Vanna. His final opportunities to play were at Morningside where he was able to share his passion for music to enhance the lives of those around him. Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Fisher Petko and her husband, David, of Yorktown; sons, Joel Fisher of Marina del Ray, Calif., Jerry Fisher and his wife, Mary Kennedy, of Washington, D.C. and Elias Bailey and his wife, Bengisu Peker of New York City; and his beloved grandchildren, Sarah Carolyn and Mark Jacob Petko. The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 22, from 4-5:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. The family would like to thank Mary Immaculate Hospital and Riverside Hospice for making Jerry's transition a quiet and peaceful one. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry was a fine person as well as a fine musician. We played together many times. The most memorable for me was when he joined the Charlie Costa Trio on the stage of the Regency Room in the Williamsburg Inn.

Jerry and Joel,
I am a little late with this. I was saddened to hear of your dad's passing.
I remember seeing him at all of those
bball games while we were in high school. I also remember seeing him at
Peninsula Funeral Home where he worked
there as a musician. Hope both of you
are doing fine.

Joel, I didn't have the pleasure of knowing your father but do know what a fine son he raised. You and your family are in my prayers.

February 21, 2014

My sincere sympathy to all of Jerry's family. I will never hear the song "Green Sleeves" without thinking of Jerry. Many years ago I frequented the Chamberlain Club with friends and if Jerry saw me enter the club, his next song would be "Green Sleeves" because he knew how much I liked to hear him play it. The Trio was so loved by so many. Happy times and Memories, particularly of Jerry.

Jerry's sense of humor was fantastic. He could get a laugh out of anything. The kindest man you will never find. A true gentleman always. I will miss him very much.

I knew Jerry for over 40 years. We played dance music together. He played several New Year's Eve gigs in the Regency Dining Room of the Williamsburg Inn with my Trio. Those are wonderful memories for me. I loved it when he performed with different Dixieland Bands too.
He was a kind and gentle man who commanded the respect of musicians on both sides of the River.
My condolences to his family.

As the former editor of the United Steelworkers Newsletter I remember Jerry fondly as a trusted source in helping us communicate our message effectively to the members of Local 8888. Jerry helped us in the design of our communications, helped us grown our membership and was always there when needed.

I'm sure Jerry is in heaven spreading joy through his musical talents. Rest in peace my friend.
