Jesse William Ormand

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Jesse William Ormand, 99, died in his sleep on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Walter Reed Convalescent Center in Gloucester, Va. Jesse was born in Gastonia, NC to the late Vance and Fannie Ormand. He was a WWII veteran, serving as a heavy equipment operator in the Pacific theater. He lived in Charles City Co., Yorktown, VA and Newburgh, NY. Jesse was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his daughters, Amy Griffith Ormand in 1961, and his second wife Thelma Hambright in 2006; his daughters Lynn Yvette Ormand, Paige Herbener and Diane Daniel; son-in-law Billy Daniel; and grandson Lonnie Hansford. He had a close and loving bond with his brothers Rankin, Mac, Ben and Jim; and sisters Rebecca Wilbur, Margaret Ormand and Frances Street; who have also preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter Nila Hansford; son-in-law John Herbener; grandchildren Mark Herbener, Debra Joyner (Dennis), Donna Day (Patrick), Steven Daniel (Melody), David Daniel (Jill), Becki West (Johnnie); fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Jesse enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce with family and friends. He was a former member of Grafton Christian Church and attended Harvest Baptist Church in Richmond while his health permitted. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and Veterans of Foreign Wars. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 29, 2013 in Grafton Christian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.
