Joyce MINKINS-SWINTON Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Peacefully and gently, on Saturday, March 13, 2010, Joyce J. Minkins-Swinton, went to her Heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her life began Feb. 2, 1956, in Blanche, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Hyler and George Minkins, Sr. After graduating from Lafayette High School in 1974, she joined the United States Army. She then spent more than 30 years in Civil Service at Fort Eustis Army Transportation Center. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a member of Little Zion Baptist church.
Joyce was a very fun-loving and joyous person who was always a delight to be around. She had a lovely smile and would never say no to anyone who needed her. She loved all sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys.
We are so thankful to God for the years we shared with her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. We find comfort in knowing she is now resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walter James, John Wayne and George Edward Minkins, Jr.
She leaves to treasure her precious memories, her sisters, Hestoria Banks, of Chicago, III., Geraldine Moore, of Columbus, Ga., Doressa Lucas, of Timberlake, N.C., Nora West and Evelyn Ruttley, both of Williamsburg; her brothers, Ronnie Minkins of Hampton and Mark Minkins and Jerry Minkins, both of Williamsburg; her 16 nieces and nephews; her four aunts; her two uncles; her special friend, William Crew; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 18, 2010, in Little Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Linwood T. Gatling officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and Mrs. Swinton may be viewed only in the church on Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. until the hour of her service. Professional services entrusted to the staff of Whiting's Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, VA 757-229-3011. Minkins Family,
We were shocked to learn of Joyce's passing. We remember her as the #1 Dallas Cowboys fan. Wallace and she would hold their usual debate about Dallas and Washington whenever they would see each other. Joyce knew that she could get my assistance at anytime.
We loved Joyce for the sweet, kind and fun person she will always be remembered as.
Hold tight to the fond memories of Joyce for they will keep her close and help you get through.
Be encouraged and blessed.

I had the pleasure to meet Joyce once our organization came together under one umbrella (Recreation Sports). When I told her my name, she told me that she would remember it because she had a sister named Evelyn as well. The working bond we had will never be forgotten. She was a very pleasant person and her smile would just light up the world. We always would get on each other during football season when Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins played. Everyone that knew her knew she was a true "die-hard" Cowboys fan. I would always tell her, your team will win one game and my team will win the other. We just left it like that, even though neither one of us knew the outcome. I will truly missed Joyce because now I do not have a friend to discuss the outcome of the game. God had plans for her! God bless the family! Evelyn Grice

Football season will never be the same again without Dallas' number one fan walking the area in her Dallas gear ready to take up the "trash talk" against any team playing her boys, especially the "deadskins". I will always treasure and remember the many, many memories with a smile. That is what made us the friends that we were until the end. RIP Joyce. I will miss you.

Joyce will be missed by all of her co-workers. I worked with Joyce for six years and considered her a good friend and a constant source of joy.
