Karen McCluney Obituary

CHARLES CITY - On Oct. 12, 2009, Karen Henderson McCluney passed away at the age of 67.
Karen resided in Charles City and was originally from Rochester, N.Y., and Falmouth, Mass.
Karen came to The College of William and Mary in November 1988 as a graphic artist in the Publications Office and in 1998 transferred to Swem Library, where she served as its graphic designer until her death. She was solely responsible for translating the library's communications and publicity needs into visual images. Her creativity and professionalism were unmistakable in the original art design and photography she used for library exhibits and numerous publications. Karen also served in the U.S. Navy prior to 1988.
Karen is survived by Richard L. McCluney Jr. of Williamsburg; two brothers, Kenneth W. Henderson II, and Kevin Jon Henderson, both of Port Richie, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia A. Henderson of Biggleswade, England, and Pamela Henderson Mansfield, of Imperial, Calif.; and two nephews, Keith Henderson and Jason Henderson.
Family and friends will gather in celebration of Karen's life and work on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Botetourt Gallery which is located on the ground floor of the Earl Gregg Swem Library at The College of William and Mary.
Arrangements are entrusted to Nelsen Funeral Home.
Karen chose to leave a legacy of life and caring by being an organ donor.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Karen's memory to the Earl Gregg Swem Library, PO Box 8794, The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA 23187-8794. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I'm sending my deepest sympathy to Karen's family and friends and colleagues. Karen was a funny, creative, lovely woman with a great sense of style and a wry wit. I enjoyed working with her, even, or possibly especially, when we disagreed. She was occasionally opinionated and feisty, but never, ever boring. The things I admired most about her were her great compassion for animals and her sincere appreciation of the simplicity of beauty.
I miss her.
