Kevin Phillips Obituary

POQUOSON - Kevin Matthew Phillips, 40, left this earthly life while sailing on the Back River with his family, doing what he loved. He commented, "This is what it's all about" before sailing away to his heavenly home. Kevin was born in Williamsburg, and lived in Poquoson the past 28 years. He was a 1991 Poquoson High School graduate; a 1995 graduate of Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Civil Engineering; worked as a Professional Engineer for Clark Nexson in Norfolk and Malcolm Pirnie in Newport News before joining the City of Newport News Waterworks as a Project Manager the past 10 years, where he was recognized for his years of excellent service. Kevin was a member of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church, Tabb; member of the American Society of Civil Engineers; coached youth soccer and baseball; was Cub Scout Leader for Troop #12 (Trinity), and Boy Scout Leader for Troop #200 (St. Luke's). He ran his own crabbing business while in high school, loved clamming, boating, and was an avid watersportsman of all kinds. Kevin was a strong Christian man who put Christ first in his life and taught his children the value of life and living through their experiences together. His love for his wife and children were evident in every aspect of his life. Kevin was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ruth & Joseph Lockhart, and paternal grandparents, Anabel & Theodore Phillips, all of Morehead City, NC. He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Kirstie; children, Trenton (13), Makenna (12), and Whitney Mae (4); parents, Ted & Jo Anne Phillips of Newport News (originally from Morehead City); and sisters, Melinda Powell (Gary) of Poquoson, Susan Pauls (Sid) of Poquoson, and Lisa Stevens (Barney) of Snoqualmie, WA, and his sisters' six children. He is also loved and is mourned by his in-law family, Paul & June Keddell, Shauna & Tim Cannella, Lindsay & Dave Lockett, Paul & Liz Keddell, and their seven children; and countless aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family will receive friends Thursday, 6-8 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, and other times at the home. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Friday, 10:00 AM, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hampton, by Monsignor Bob Perkins. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. A reception to celebrate Kevin's life will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson, immediate following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in person or by mail to: Kirstie Phillips For the Benefit of the Phillips Family Education Fund, TowneBank, 1 Old Oyster Point Rd., Ste. 100, Newport News, VA, 23602. Kirstie, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. There are not enough words to say, hugs to give, or hands to hold that will ease your pain. However, your faith and trust in God will give you the strength you need to carry on; even in times when it seems impossible. Matthew 19:26 "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Trust in God that he and he alone will get you and your family throught this, even in your darkest moments.

Thoughts and Prayers,

There are no words that adequately express our feelings when we lose a loved one. "I'm sorry" just doesn't seem enough. Remember that even though we cannot understand why, God has a plan for us all; have faith in Him that He will bring you comfort in your time of sorrow. Lean on Him and your family and friends to see you through the dark days ahead. Kirstie, Susan, Melinda, Lisa, Ted and Joanne ~ we love you and are here for you. Trenton, Makenna & Whitney, you are such brave young people and you make your family so proud! Remember that your dad is always there, in your heart, and nothing can take that away from you.
