Luke Carpenter Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Luke Carpenter Sr., 73, of Newport News, Virginia, departed this life on Monday, October 31, 2016 at Sentara Nursing Center in Virginia Beach. He was previously comforted by family and friends at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News after a lengthy illness. Luke retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 30 years of service. Luke was a member of First Church of God in Newport News where he served as a Deacon. Luke was preceded in death by his father Zeler Vincient, his mother Mamie L. Carpenter-Moore (Freddie), and brother Danny Moore. He leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, Luke Carpenter Jr. (Tracey); Dedrick C. Leary; four daughters, Aleane Crowell; Paulette A. Belfield-Williams (Leon); Sharon M.C. Toney (Kendrick); and Tawanda M. Brown (Corey); one brother, Lather M. Carpenter (Rita); and three sisters, Lillian C. Lewis (Ormond); Ruth Carpenter-Pope; and Mary Jane Carpenter, fifteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many beloved cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Chapel, in Newport News, Virginia. The viewing is Friday from 3:00-6:00 p.m., the family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Burial will take place on a later date, thus the family request that no flowers be sent to the funeral chapel.

We were so sorry to hear of Luke's passing. We met him 8 or 9 years ago at the community garden at Denbigh Presbyterian. He taught us so much and we will always remember him fondly.

I've lost a big brother that I am going to truly miss, but I will remember all the good times we enjoyed together. He taught me a lot about life and how to be a hard worker. But my condolences goes out to my nieces and nephews his children because they lost their only Daddy. So I want to say I am so sorry for your, Our lost.
