Marjorie Keeling Obituary

WINDSOR - Marjorie Copeland Keeling, 83, died July 2, 2006, at Sentara Obici Hospital. Born October 10, 1922, in Nansemond County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Richard Henry and Zelma Joyner Copeland of Smithfield and was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Dow Moger Keeling. Mrs. Keeling lived most of her life in Isle of Wight County. She was a graduate of Elon College in North Carolina and did advanced work at Old Dominion University, the College of William and Mary and Christopher Newport College. As a dedicated school teacher, she taught in Courtland for three years, Chuckatuck for two years, Windsor High School for 26 years and loved every minute of it. Following her retirement, she taught as an adjunct teacher at Paul D. Camp Community College for many years. She was a member of Windsor Christian Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, had been active in the Women's Fellowship for over fifty years and was a former member of the Board of Deacons. Mrs. Keeling was also a former member of the Isle of Wight County School Board. She was an active member, officer and/or Director of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society; the Colonel William Allen Chapter, NSDAR; Isle of Wight County Historical Society; the Newman Family Society; the Windsor Women's Club, Boykin's Tavern; Isle of Wight Museum; the Jamestown Society; Friends of Windsor Library and was a founding member of the Col. Thomas Bridger Society. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Dow and Johanna van der Spek Keeling, Thomas Walke and Rebecca Miller Keeling and two grandsons, Christofer Hans Keeling and Zachery Tyler-Joyner Keeling. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at the Windsor Christian Church by the Rev. Basil Ballard with burial in Mt Zion Cemetery in Suffolk. Visitation prior to the service will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday at the church. The family will receive friends at her home, 35 N. Court Street, Windsor, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. is serving the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Women's Fellowship of Windsor Christian Church, Box 407, Windsor, VA 23487 or the Scholarship Fund of the Col. William Allen Chapter, NSDAR, 6 Waterview Circle, Smithfield, VA 23430. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.
