Michael Finneran Obituary

Michael Phillip "Mike" Finneran passed away on August 8, 2022, at age 67.

Mike was born to Phyllis and Jim Finneran in Ohio on October 24, 1954. Upon graduating with a degree in English from Southeastern Massachusetts University, he became a reporter and photographer for the Sentinel and Enterprise in Fitchburg, MA. He then moved on to become an editor at The Record in Bergen County, NJ, The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, VA, and the Miami Herald.

Leaving Miami for a year-long road trip across the U.S., Mike afterwards found employment with NASA, working in public affairs at both Goddard Space Flight Center and Langley Research Center, where he retired in 2018. He was an avid photographer and spent much of his retirement time practicing his passion.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Jim. He leaves behind three children, Gregory, Lena and Niko, mother Phyllis, brothers Chris and Pat, several nieces and nephews, and Remi, his Anatolian Shepherd. Mike was never without a dog or multiple dogs, who were a source of joy and comfort to him.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday, August 28, from 1 - 3 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be sent to an animal rescue organization of your choice.

Sorry to lose a good friend like Mike. Played hockey with him back in the Stow days. He reconnected with me on FB a dozen years ago. We shared all sorts of stories about our seperate lives, our dogs, past relationships, mutual friendships and we all appreciated his photography. I will "undoubtedly" miss him! Sincere condolences to his 3 children and extended family members.

Mike and I were from the NRHS Class of '72. He was one of my FB friends and we shared many chats and laughs. I enjoyed viewing pics that he would post of his surroundings including his dogs. Sincere condolences to his family. We'll miss you, Mike.

I was saddened to hear of Mike's passing. I knew that he was experiencing some issues but I didn't know to what extent. During our working careers we interfaced frequently and kept in touch after our retirements. I considered him to be a true friend and know that he will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
