Michael Mark Obituary

Lt Col Michael Mark, 70, of Yorktown, VA. died on September 27, 2022 after a 2 year battle with Lymphoma. The son of Renee and Arthur Mark, he was born in Chicago and grew up in Northbrook, IL, Great Neck, NY and Harrisburg, PA., where he graduated from High School. He was a brilliant and determined student with a near-photographic memory. He sang in the HS choir, was an avid reader and his lifelong passion for the Revolutionary War, Civil War and WWII history began quite young. He attended Franklin & Marshall College for a Liberal Arts degree. His law degree is from The George Washington University Law School, and he later acquired an LLM degree from the same school.

Michael dedicated over 40 years of his life to government service. His passion for aviation began as a child and, upon acquiring his law degree at George Washington University, he soon took a commission with the U.S. Air Force as a Judge Advocate. With 22 years of service, Lt. Colonel Mark retired, having been stationed in many strategic locations, including Headquarters in Washington DC, Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and as staff Judge Advocate at Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee. He was proud to have been instrumental in the procurement and production of many Air Force aircraft.

Michael was able to extend his passion for and knowledge of the Aerospace Industry into his second 20-year career as a contract specialist for NASA at Langley Center, VA. There, he served as an attorney-advisor and team lead with NASA OGC. With his deep knowledge of procurement law, he displayed a high level of integrity, taught by example and mentored many. He leaves a legacy of understanding and shared his procurement expertise through 50 video sessions entitled "Between 2 Fars."

He leaves his mother, Renee Mark; sisters, Amy Lonas and her husband, Ken Lonas and Ellen Mark and her husband, Andrew Raymond; niece, Julia Raymond; nephews, Cory Lonas and Nathan Raymond and a great-niece, Mila and great-nephew, Arthur.

One of the ways that Michael gave back was to establish a scholarship at his beloved Franklin & Marshall College. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the Michael I. Mark Endowed Scholarship at go.fandm.edu/give or Franklin & Marshall College, Attn: Gift Accounting, P.O.3003, Lancaster, PA 17604-3003.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 3:00p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery (5310 Milners Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434) with Military Honors by Rabbi Sokol. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

I first met Michael at F& M College. He was a serious guy who tried to make a contribution even there. But you quickly realized that he also had a great sense of humor. He agreed to share an apartment with me as we both headed to Washington, DC for law school.
Michael loved his family, relished the family cruises and seeing his nieces and nephews grow up. He was tremendously loyal to his friends and believed in such things as sending out anniversary cards every year. Michael should be remembered for all of these things as well as his service to all of us via his government work. He was the type of person who makes things better for all of us.

Michael and I attended both F&M and GW Law School. We shared many good times, and he was a wonderful friend. He had the gift of constancy of friendship: Michael attended our wedding in 1974 and never failed to send timely greetings at the time of our wedding anniversary, including last June.

My condolences to Michael's extended family. I only knew him through one or two phone calls and some emails as I researched the Schwartz family.

My condolences to Michael's family. Worked just down the hall from him for many years at NASA. Truly enjoyed listening and learning from him.
