Nancy MULLINS Obituary

YORKTOWN - Nancy Nims Mullins, age 65, wife of Dr. James M. Mullins III, passed away on Oct. 23, 2010 after an extended illness.
A native of Darien, Conn., Nancy was born July 24, 1945, to the late Thomas L. Nims and Barbara Beach Nims. She was the granddaughter of Charles W. Nims and Catherine Smith Nims of Greenfield, Mass., and Wesley H. Beach and Flora Miller Beach of Beverly Hills, Calif. Following her marriage in 1970, Nancy and her family lived in numerous states, and have resided in Yorktown, Va., since they moved to Virginia in 1991.
Nancy graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1967. She worked in a variety of positions; as secretary, financial loan officer, library assistant and substitute teacher. Throughout her married life, Nancy also volunteered her services to numerous organizations and agencies. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Hampton Roads Garden Club, the Newport News Medical Society Alliance, in which she served as Co-President, and she was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads. She was also an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Yorktown, Va.
One of Nancy's passions was genealogy, and she enjoyed spending time with her sisters and cousins working on various family history projects. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Comte de Grasse chapter of the NSDAR, and of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. Her greatest passion, however, was being a wife and mother. Her son, Andy, was the joy of her life.
In addition to her husband and son, James Anderson 'Andy' Mullins, Nancy is survived by her sisters, Susan Nims Scott, and Catherine Nims Swett; her brother-in-law, Richard W. Swett; and her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Judy Mullins Lucas and Gregory C. Lucas, and Richard C. Mullins and Jean M. Mullins. She is also survived by an uncle, David W. Nims; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Sincere thanks are extended to Dr. Kimberly Schlesinger and other staff members of Peninsula Cancer Institute, for their care and support. Nancy's family also extends deepest thanks to loving family members and special friends, for their ongoing care and help throughout her illness.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 300 Ella Taylor Road, Yorktown, VA 23692. A celebration of her life will be held at James River Country Club immediately following the funeral. Interment will be at a later date in Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, Mass.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd., Newport News, VA 23606; or to the Boy Scouts of America, 11721 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA 23606.
Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News, Va., and Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., in Greenfield, Mass., are in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Shocked to hear of this. Nancy was such a vital force at our 40th DHS reunion a few years back. I'll always treasure my picture of her holding a big punch bowl aloft, looking as if it were her 15th reunion rather than her 40th.

Mac and Andy,
It is hard to believe only a few months ago we were at the Homestead blessed with Nancy's presence. I am honored that I got to know her after all the years of hearing about your family from my parents. I know she is the brightest Angel in heaven and is smiling down on everyone with her cheery voice and positive attitude. Just in the few days we were together this summer, I took away such a peacefulness from her and I try to remember this peace everyday when I go out into the world. Jim and I send our love and support and hope that all the wonderful memories you shared will help get you through your grief and

As she kept others in her heart, so is she now kept in the hearts of the many who were privileged to know her.

Dr. Mullins and family,

Words cannot express how saddened I was to hear about Nancy passing from my parents last night. She was a beautiful soul who I am grateful to have known and shared in her warmth. The last time I saw her was a two months ago, when she came outside to meet my son with Penny and Lamont and other OPC neighbors. She was so cheerful and happily interacted with Sebastian to make him laugh. She also shared how much in love she was with her own baby boy, Andy, when he was born. You are all in my thoughts and prayers and I hope you are able to draw some comfort knowing how much Nancy was loved by everyone and how she touched people’s hearts with her thoughtfulness, kindness and grace.

Love,
