Phyllis was born on Aug. 3, 1930, in Powhatan County, Va. She attended Powhatan High School and then married Dennis Lee Nicholas of Buckingham, Va., in 1947. Phyllis and Dennis were Peninsula residents since 1947. Phyllis was a loving mother that sacrificed for her family. She loved cooking for her family and friends. She served in the Newport News Public Schools as a cafeteria manager for 31 years, most of which was at Hidenwood Elementary School, cooking homemade rolls for the children and staff. After retiring, Phyllis enjoyed gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Chapel in Hampton. Phyllis will be remembered for her sweet, gentle spirit to all.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Dennis Nicholas; and siblings, Robert Wells, Barbara Bass and Pat Mitten.
She is survived by her two sons, Dennis Wayne Nicholas (Mo), and Ronald Dale Nicholas (Patti); her five grandchildren, Jessica Smith (Marco), Anna Nicholas, Meagan Vickery (Gavin), Stephanie Nicholas, and Austin Nicholas; one great-grandchild, Nora Vickery, and another baby girl on the way. She is also survived by her sisters, Jean Speas and Alice Baggett; as well as a special friend, Jane Everett.

TO THE FAMILY: Mrs. Nicholas was VERY SPECIAL. She touched our hearts with her kind and gentle manner. Even when she did not feel good she managed to bake us goodies and bring them over. Since our retirement we have thought of her so often. Hoping that all the good memories will help you during this time of sorrow. / Shirley, Clara, Jean (and all) at Hampton Rds Neurosurgery

Mrs. Nicholas was a kind, gentle lady. I remember when she took cookies over to my dad's lab as a thank you.
Pat and Ron, we'd attend her funeral, but unfortunately we'll be out of town this weekend.
Please accept our condolences. C.D. and Kathy Young
