I served with then 1st Sgt Gaul in 1972, with Battery D, 2nd Bn, 12th Marines in Okinawa. We lieutenants referred to him as "Cool Ray" due to his demeanor and his sunglasses. I recall once I was asking Marines to do something and he pulled me aside and said "I tried that as a lieutenant and it didn't work for me". Message received! I truly appreciated his wisdom and willingness to work with those of us lieutenants. He took great care of the Marines with whom he served. Best regards, belatedly to the Gaul Family. Semper Fidelis, Marine.

It is with my sincerest sorrow that I express my sympathy to the family in the death of Ray. For many years I spent time with Ray at the Fleet Reserve talking about family, work, the Marines and many other things. He was such a compassionate man and such a perfect gentleman. I will forever cherish my conversations with him. Judy, you have so many memories to hold in your heart and may God Bless you and your family during this time.

SgtMaj was a great leader of men and I can state that he was respected by those who served under him. We all also feared stepping on his grass.
