Mrs. Crittenden and Family:
I was sadden to hear the passing of Coach. He had a profound affect on me as student when I attended Denbigh High School ('76) and later as an educator/coach at Warwick. He encouraged me to be a "coach" and was very supportive of my endeavors to do so. When I would return home from college he always wanted to know what the latest things being taught where and how I was doing with them all. When I came to Warwick as an assistant football coach and later to teach US and VA History, Coach was there to welcome and encourage me....as always. Quick to share a good story and insight into the teaching-coaching business, his counsel was on point and to the point. And he could tell some stories.
Coach enriched the lives of those he touched on a daily basis. I am forever grateful for him being such an influence in my personal and professional development.
Coach Crittenden was a blessing to education in our community, state and country.

To The entire Crittenden Family, My heart is sadden to hear of the lost of Mr. Raymond Crittenden Jr. affectionally known as "Coach". His life and principles certainly fall directly under the Tree of a Godly spirit in which he lived. Helping one another to be better then we found one another. I has the opportunity to work with "Lonnie" his son in a number of positions and his first order of busines was always to mentor young professionals in the work place. Always the under dog could win with the proper support, strategy and habit. Success was a change of habit, came with a cost. My heart is sadden for the family at this time, cause I know where Lonnie adopted his principles and spirit. Fruit falls under the tree when you look at this Family. Raymond lived developing others, demostrated to his kids real success and thoses he mentor. Right was right even if no one follow the strategy day end. Coach's spirit will live in those he touched forever to spread the same value system to approach life's challenges. Bless you all at this time. God is still good and his grace and mercy is present. Raymond is in your hearts forever. Just reflect his wisdom at any time, and he becomes present. Anthony , Alice and Toni Cannady

Coach Crittenden - I want to speak to what he was, but upon reflection, I thought of the number of young men like me upon whom he had such a tremendous impact. Reflecting further, I realized that spirits never transition. Coach Crittenden's spirit is implanted in the many minds and souls among us existing spirits he has touched. In his honor it is our obligation and responsibility to him to pass the light of his spirit on to present and future generations. My condolences to the family.

To the Crittenden family, I wish to extend my deepest condolences. Mr. C was a great, kind hearted, compassionate person. Most people can remember at least one teacher who had a particularly positive impact on their lives. Although Mr. C never taught me in a classroom, he certainly gave me (and probably many others) great life lessons.
I remember skipping school for the first time and being caught by Mr. C. I was sent home and told to have my parents call. Scared to death, I called and faked being my mother. Mr. C immediately recognized the hoax and began to lecture me. Realizing my fear, instead of punishing me further, he told me to return to school the next day and promise never to skip again… I never did.

I wish to extend my condolences to Mrs. Crittenden and family during their time of bereavement. Mr. Crittenden truly influenced my life and others while at Denbigh High. Because of him we all strived for the best and did our very best in everything we did in life and still continue to do so. I like, so many others, will truly miss him. I’m very grateful for knowing him. I remember I got sent to his office and he pulled out a “pink” slip, he stated he did not want to see me again and he did not until the day of graduation. He then said to me “why did I not come and visit?” I just laughed and told him because of what he said to me that day changed my life. My heartfelt prayers go out to the family as well as all of us who knew him. Mr. Crittenden will truly be missed. – Denbigh High Class of ’77

The Crittenden Family,
My condolences to you all. Surely you were blessed with this man in your family.
Coach was the only reason I got through High School Gym, (Denbigh 77) I was not the Jock type. And though we didn't really have much in common, he saw my plight and helped me along, I will always remember him as smart, athletic and cool. He was the type of guy all the kids liked and respected. I will include Coach and his family in my prayers tonight.
Thanks Coach!

Mrs. Crittenden and Family; I was heartbroken when my sister called with the News of the Coach Passing. There are so many Men from Newport News that are better people because of Coach. He was not only a Teacher to so many young people, but a example of what we as young Students could achieve with hard work and a goal in mind. As a young Man, I always saw Coach as a cool Adult. I know now what I saw, was a strong competent and accomplished Man, that was always there for us. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As a student in the late 1950s, I had three great teachers at Huntington High School. "Coach Crittenden" was one of them. He was kind, thoughtful in his assessments, and deeply personable. He and I shared a camaraderie that was more man-to-man than man-to-boy. As I advise my students, I am sometimes aware of his influence that constitutes a part of who I am as a teacher and mentor. Much of what he gave to his students derived from his innately caring and loving spirit. His love will be eternal.

I cannot imagine the number of people and former students that also feel the family's loss! Those that influence children... influence the world and he certainly did that. I do want to express my sincere gratitude for the guidance and influence that "Mr. Crittenden" personally gave to me. A mental picture of him and Coach Johnson walking the halls of Denbigh HS with those wooden shop paddles still make me laugh! I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Raymond C. Crittenden Jr. I will forever remember him and be grateful for his role as principal at Denbigh High School. Undoubtedly, if it had not been for him, I would have never graduated. He was truly a caring man and I thank God for him and pray for your strength in the Lord during these times of sorrow. May God bless you.

To the Crittenden Family,
I wish to express my deepest sympathy on your loss. I was fortunate to know both the coach while attending Huntington and Mrs. Crittenden and Thursa while attending Carver. The coach was a great influence on many of our young men. I sincerely hope that some of the men he mentored will carry on his torch.

Mrs, Flora Crittenden and Family,
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I will always cherish my time with Mr. C. both at Warwick High School and at Denbigh High School. He was a caring, concerned boss as well as a friend. I could always count on him to help me with any "problem" student, who needed only a stern talk , rather than a suspension. Gratefully, I know that your many precious moments and memories will sustain and comfort you today, tomorrow, and always.
Blessings and love,
