Rene Lequeux Obituary

COBBS CREEK - Rene Gaston Lequeux, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 23rd.
Rene Lequeux, of Hudgins Point Cobb's Creek for the past several years, Major (USAF Ret.), was a long time resident of Mathews County Courthouse. A native of Belgium, Major Lequeux arrived in this country at the age of 7. He spent his youth in California and worked in stables and later managed a Western riding academy. He started riding in jackpot shows and rodeos at the age of 15. A background he would later bring to Mathews County.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941, and went into an aviation student program, receiving his commission as Second Lieutenant in 1943. With the 15th Air Force, he piloted 50 combat missions out of southern Italy in 1944, in a B-24 Liberator. Based in Okinawa during the Korean conflict, he flew 21combat missions and amassed over 5,000 total flying hours during his career. Retiring in 1964, with more than 20 years of active duty, Major Lequeux's decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with Cluster, 7 Air Medals, and the Bronze Star. The Air Force pilot and his wife, Martha, the former Miss Martha Scott of Hampton, settled their family in Mathews upon his retirement, where he opened Windmill House Stables and began to board horses and train youngsters in riding and care for their animals and equipment. A favorite avocation was his tenure as the stadium announcer for Mathews High School football games, where he became known as The Voice of Mathews.
He is survived by his wife and their five daughters, Jamie Colonna of Newport News, Martha Kay Lequeux of University Park, Md., Scotti Lequeux of Kilmarnock, Michele Schultz and Holly Matthews both of Quinton. He is also survived by four daughters from a previous marriage, Renee Boehme of Salt Lake, Utah, Marion Huey and Jeanne Lequeux of the Spokane, Wash. area, and Connie Gregg of California. He has 14 grandchildren, James and Erin Tierney, Shane, Sarah, and William Matthews, Nolan Rene Schultz, Lynnae and Barbara Boehme, Randy and Ginger Gregg, Theodore, Robert, and Michelle Green, and Cindy Stevens.
He was a member of Apostles Lutheran Church in Gloucester. Services are to be held there at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27. A Christian burial with full military honors will follow at Maury Cemetery in Richmond. Family visitation is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Foster Faulkner Funeral Home in Mathews. Mrs. Lequeux and family,

I only recently heard about Major (Ret) Lequeux's death and wanted to express my sincere condolences. I have been out of the area for many years and have regretfully lost contact with many. Michele and I graduated together and were room mates for a while. I think of her often, but especially now, my thoughts and prayers are with her and your whole family. May your fond memories give you comfort at this extremely difficult time.

Dear Mrs. Lequeux,

We were deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Lequeux's passing. As you know I met him so many years ago when I first started working in the swimming pool business. Over the years Mr. Lequeux became more than a customer, he became a good friend. I always enjoyed spending time with him, his friendship meant a lot to me as I believe it did to him. My wife, Barbara, was also very fond of him and always looked forward to seeing him at Christmas and at McBroom. Our hearts go out to you for your loss.
With love.

Mrs. Lequeux and family,

I was sorry to hear of Major Lequeux's passing. He was a wonderful person. I remember having conversations with him as a young boy that really sparked my interest in joining the U. S. Air Force/Virginia Air National Guard, and becoming a professional pilot. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Mrs. Lequeux and family,
I was so sorry to read of Major Lequeux's passing. I remember when you folks moved to that big old house and turned it from a long-neglected piece of property into a beautiful home. I was in awe of this golden couple and their beautiful girls. As I got older, I came to see the Major as more than Martha Kay's (and, the other girls) dad. I came to see his humor and intelligence and how you complimented this man with your own talents. I am so sorry for your loss and I will be keeping you and your family in my prayers.

For me, a part of Maj. Lequeux never left "Windmill House". Often when driving by I would turn my head and I could almost catch a glimpse of him in the yard. The last few years brought alot of changes for him. Even though he has left you in body, his spirit lives on in his family, his love of life and the memories he left to each of you. You are all in my thoughts, take care of each other.
With Love, Mary Elaine
