Richard Artman Obituary

MATHEWS - Richard Leigh "Dick" Artman, 70, lost his valiant fight with cancer on July 8, 2013. He departed this life in the same manner in which he lived it, with strength, honor and courage. Dick was born in Newport News, Va., on March 17, 1943, to the late George B. Artman Jr., and Anne Holton Artman. Dick lived a life filled with adventure, romance and travel. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, attended aviation school and served three tours in South East Asia, including Vietnam. After 20 years of service to our country, Dick retired and spent the next decade as captain of a private sailboat "The Chesapeake." During this time he visited many of our country's most beautiful harbors and seaports. Since 1990 Dick has lived in Mathews County, Va., where he leaves behind many wonderful friends. Also left to cherish Dick's memory are his wife, Susan G. Gary, daughter, Laurie A. Artman, both of Newport News; brother, Michael A. Artman (Terri) of Yorktown, Va.; and sister, Frances A. Shelton (Carl) of Newport News; as well as three nieces and two nephews. Preceding him in death were his brothers, George B. Artman III and Robert B. Artman. In honor of Dick's wishes there will be no traditional service. He treasured everything about his life on earth, relishing all pleasures, great and small. His family and friends will always remember him with highest regard. Dick was an animal enthusiast. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to your local SPCA or Humane Society.

While I rejoice in how Dick passed; for he did it his way,I do grieve deeply the loss of my true friend. Loving, supportive and I always knew I could count on him to put things in perspective. I will hold close to my heart our visit on his birthday this year. We shared drinks from a bottle of Jack, discussed life and his illness. He comforted me, dried my tears and reassured me. He loved ever aspect of his life, expressed no regrets and shared it wasn't death he feared; being an invalid was his only concern. Our last phone conversation he had just completed cutting the grass! While I fussed,he laughed. He loved unconditionally, lived with joy each day and left all who are blessed to have known him all the better. I miss you my friend and you will always have a place in my heart.
Laurie, Fran, Mike (and families) I am so very sorry for your loss. He loved you each so very much.

My condolences to Dickie's family. I remember him well and when he joined the Corps, back in '59, I think it was. I also remember his first day back from boot camp, when he stopped by the school in uniform. Bobby and I were coming back from lunch somewhere and stopped to talk with him. He was a really nice person all round. Sorry to hear of his passing, just as I was at Bobby's.
