Richard Sallade Obituary

Richard Lawrence Sallade, M.D. died December 15, 2023, in Newport News at age 94. He was born August 16, 1929 in Pittsburg, PA to Edwin and Maude Sallade. He was predeceased by his son Thomas Richard Sallade; his sister Mary Alice Fleming; and his brother Frederick Sallade.

Dr. Sallade graduated from Ohio University and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital where he met his wife Maureen. They lived in Boston while he completed his residency in urology at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Boston VA Medical Center. He served as a physician in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Minot, ND. He relocated to Durham, NC where he was on the urology staff at Duke University Hospital and served as Chief of Urology at the Durham VA Medical Center. In 1964, Dr. Sallade joined Hampton Roads Urology and served on the medical staff of Riverside Regional Medical Center until his retirement in 1999 at age 70.

Dr. Sallade was elected to the national medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha, a lifelong honor bestowed to physicians dedicated to the profession and art of healing. He also served on the Board of Directors at Riverside Hospital and as President of both the Newport News Medical Society and the Virginia Urological Society.

Dr. Sallade was active in community leadership roles which included serving as the President of the Peninsula Symphony and on the boards of the Newport News YMCA and the Virginia Opera. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he enjoyed volunteering as a remedial reading tutor for Newport News Public Schools.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Maureen Smyth Sallade; their three children, daughter Linda Kay Madler and her husband Mark, son Raymond Bruce Sallade and his wife Julie Cox Sallade, all of Newport News; son Ross Edwin Sallade and his wife Heather Means Sallade of Raleigh, NC; and daughter-in-law LeeAnne Venturino Sallade of Christiansburg, VA. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren who affectionately called him "Grumpa."

Dick enjoyed a number of outdoor pursuits including tennis, snow skiing, golf, sailing, fishing and hunting. A hunting trip was deemed successful if his not so faithful canine companion Whiskey could be located by the end of the day, and a sailboat race was considered a win if the spinnaker was raised correctly and no children fell overboard. Dick and Maureen enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with friends. Dick will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 23 at 11:00 AM with a reception to follow at the James River Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 6812 River Rd, Newport News, VA 23607 or the Salvation Army Virginia Peninsula, 1033 Big Bethel Rd, Hampton, VA 23666.

Dr Sallade saved my life when no other Dr could. I was really sick when Dr Hollowell in Portsmouth Va referred us to Dr Sallade. I had reflux kidney and bladder issues. After being diagnosed and going thru several surgeries, my mother was told I would only live till I wasv18 years of age. Dr Sallades procedures prolonged my life...I'm 64 years old now have 2 grown children which is a blessing from God. My deepest sympathy goes out to Dr sallades family I'm sorry for the loss to me, he is and always will be a great man of God.

Dear Maureen and Family,
I am so saddened to hear of Dick´s passing and I know he will be missed.
I remember fondly his wit and sense of humor and his dedication to his family , colleagues and patients.
I so appreciated when you both welcomed Rich and me to the community with invites to the Oyster Roast at JRCC , thanksgiving dinner and to the lake. You both were always supportive of us and our children. I hope you can find peace in knowing that he touched so so many lives and left his positive influence on us all.
