Robert Callis Obituary

HAMPTON - Robert Lee 'Bob' Callis, 84, departed this life and entered eternal peace on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Sentara Careplex Hospital. He was born to the late Robert and Helen Callis in Hampton, Va., Feb. 4, 1920. His wife, Willa Mae; brothers, William and Armstead Callis; and sister, Marie Holden, preceded him in death. He was educated in the Hampton Public School System. He served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was employed with the Hampton School Board and civil service at Fort Eustis and retired from both after many years of committed service. Robert was united in marriage to Willa Mae. They had one stepson, Daniel. He leaves to cherish his memories three sisters, Mary Oliver, Helen Kemp and Martha Johnson; two brothers, Leon (Daisy) and John Callis; many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Robert was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where he accepted Christ at an early age. He served as a faithful and devoted member of the Senior Usher Board Ministry. A homegoing celebration of his life will be held at noon, Thursday, April 8, at First Baptist Church, 229 North King St., Hampton, with the Rev. Dr. William D. Booth officiating. Interment will follow in the Hampton National Cemetery (University Section). Mr. Callis will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Viewing will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Smith Brothers Funeral Home. Family and friends will assemble at 16 Bernard Ave., Hampton, by 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are entrusted to Smith Brothers Funeral Home, Hampton, 723-4117.
