Robert Fritts Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Former U.S. ambassador Robert E. Fritts died on September 28, 2015. He had lived in the Williamsburg area since 1991. Born in Oak Park, Ill. and with a University of Michigan degree, he served as a Navy officer on destroyers before entering the U.S. Foreign Service in 1959. Initial overseas posts included American embassies in Luxembourg, Japan, Indonesia and the Sudan. In 1973, he arrived at Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, coincident with the assassinations of the U.S. ambassador and his deputy. In 1974 at age 39, he became the then-youngest ambassador in the history of the Foreign Service when assigned to Rwanda, a record he wryly recalled "lasted about six months". He later served as the U.S. ambassador to Ghana during a period of fluctuating bilateral relations. Other State Department policy positions included Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Deputy Inspector General. Following retirement in 1991, he joined the faculty of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. He was also a senior fellow with the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA and an occasional UN observer of elections in Africa, including that of Nelson Mandela. In later years, he and his wife Audrey both lectured on cruise ships. He served on the boards of a number of civic and foreign policy organizations in Williamsburg and Hampton Roads, including the W&M Reves Center of International Studies, the W&M Jefferson Program in Public Policy, the Middle Plantation Club, the Williamsburg Symphonia, the Williamsburg Choral Guild and the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads. He was also a member of the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs and the American Foreign Service Association in Washington, DC. He had a keen interest in history and loved choral music. He was a stillwater canoeist, freshwater fisherman, and a tennis and golf enthusiast. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Audrey, of whom he often said that he was "unfailingly supported through her knowledge, charm and courage," and two daughters, Susan Herzog (Charles) of South Salem, NY and Robin Long (Bob) of Flagstaff, AZ. He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Leigh, Callum, Zachary and Matthew. A memorial service will be held at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg, VA, on October 10, 2015 at 3 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church designated for the Chancel Choir or to the International Rescue Committee or other international refugee relief organization.

I was a 20-year-old Marine Security Guard arriving to his first post in Accra in July 1984 when Ambassador Fritts was there. I remember him as an erudite, sophisticated and kind man personally and professionally, though my stay there was to only last about six months due to shenanigans that ultimately caused me and two other Marines to be sent out of Accra.

I recall how nervous I was dancing with his glamorous wife, Audrey, at the Marine Corps birthday ball that November. I was so nervous I didn't eat a thing until the dance with Audrey was concluded: it was a walz from Dr. Zhivago, I believe. It was excruciating for us both because I couldn't dance at all. The ambassador soon swept his wife out of my arms and they moved expansively and gracefully across the floor, to the relief of everyone.

I fondly recall Robin as well, who would visit we Marines as we stood duty at the lonely outpost away from the embassy (the annex) where visas were issued. She was always kind enough to spend time with us talking about sundry topics and was an absolute chip off the old block of the ambassador and his wife: intelligent, charming and kind.

On behalf of all Marines who served under the ambassador, I offer my belated but nonetheless heartfelt condolences to the Fritts family.

Sincerely,
Joe Schermann

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Ambassador Fritts ~ I only knew him for a short time in Ghana in 1985 when I went to live there with my mother during her assignment to work with him. I wish I had known about this sooner ~ my thoughts and prayers are with Audrey and family ~ I just wanted you to know that I will always have fond memories of softball games at Bud Field, conversations between innings ~ and welcoming us to country when we first arrived.

I am so deeply sorry and distressed to learn of Ambassador Fritts' passing. Bob was beyond gracious and welcoming to me to the Board of Advisors of TJPPP. A modest man of so many accomplishments, he exemplified the traits every ambassador should possess. I shall never forget his kindnesses, nor his warmth to me during trying times. I feel the profound loss Bob's family has suffered.

As a former Co-Chairperson for the Great Decisions Program for the League of Women Voters of the Williamsburg Area, Ambasador Bob Fritts was the first person I called to find knowledgeble speakers on whatever topic was presented by the Foreign Policy Association for the year. He was alway gracious and helpful ensuring the Program had good speakers in which to inform the community on various foreign policy topics. He was well known throughout the community. I know I will miss him and I am sure many others will too. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time.

The McElroy clan join in extending our sincerest sympathy to you all.

We met Bob in Tokyo in the mid-60s; and we served together on and off over the years, including on the Japan Desk and in the inspection corps. Bob was a quiet, strong leader with fierce integrity, qualities honed in the Navy.

All business at work, we remember him mostly as a caring friend with wicked wit and and occasional explosive laugh.

Accept our condolences as we think of you at this sad time.

Always Faithful,
Susan, Michelle, Matthew, and Howard McElroy

An exemplar and hero of the United States Foreign Service, and friend and helper to all who met him.

Per John Donne, we are all indeed diminished by his passing.

Ambassador Fritts was a terrific colleague, friend and mentor to me in the Foreign Service, and I will really miss him. My heart-felt condolences to Audrey and his family.
We traveled together to South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria and Togo while working for the Inspector General. For those who knew him at other points in his life, his personal account of his Foreign Service life is at: http://www.adst.org/OH%20TOCs/Fritts,%20Robert%20E.toc.pdf

Bob's death is a stunning blow to all of us who knew him. My own close experience was with him on the board of the Williamsburg Area Performing Arts Center, where he combined diplomacy with tenacity to keep us going forward. Many factors conspired to doom the project, and Bob was a realist to appreciate that. His very recent contributions to the speakers program of Middle Plantation Club reflect his determination to see life to the fullest.

We will always remember his patience in helping our high school granddaughter learn more about the situation in Africa as it pertains to our government policies.
