Stephen MacGregor Obituary
Stephen D. MacGregor, D.D.S. passed away Monday November 3, 2014 in Raleigh, North Carolina after a courageous battle with Frontotemporal Degeneration. He was born on December 13, 1952 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Jean Dick MacGregor and Robert Dick. Steve, his sister Denise, and his brother Tom, both of whom he loved deeply, were raised by his devoted mother Jean. He graduated from James Island High School in Charleston, South Carolina in 1970. Steve attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was one of only two students selected from his junior year class for early admission into the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. Steve was the recipient of numerous academic scholarships. He graduated from UNC-CH with a B.S. in Dentistry in 1974 and a D.D.S. in 1977. Steve met the love of his life, Cynthia ("Cindy") Chiles, on their first day of dental school. He and Cindy were married on December 20, 1975 in High Point, North Carolina. After graduating from dental school, he and his wife opened their first dental office in Seymour, Tennessee near Knoxville. In 1981 Steve was accepted into the Emory University School of Dentistry residency program for Oral Pathology in Atlanta, Georgia, completing his residency in 1983. He was invited to become a member of the Emory University School of Dentistry faculty after completion of his residency, where he taught dental students as a faculty member of the Oral Medicine Department. Steve's greatest joy was the birth of his daughter, Carri Griffin MacGregor, on March 8, 1985 in Atlanta, Georgia. He moved his young family in 1988 to join a dental practice group in Savannah, Georgia, and opened his own dental practice in Newport News, Virginia in 1992, where he remained in practice until his retirement in 2011. In retirement, Steve and Cindy moved to Apex, North Carolina. He was a member and Deacon of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church and in later years a member and Elder of LaCrosse Memorial Presbyterian Church. Steve was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, American Dental Association, Virginia Dental Association and Peninsula Dental Association. Steve was an outdoorsman who loved camping and fishing. He was a soft-spoken, kind, selfless, and giving man who always gave others much more than he ever asked in return. Steve will be deeply missed by his friends and his devoted and beloved family including: his wife of over 38 years, Dr. Cynthia MacGregor of Apex, N.C.; daughter Carri MacGregor of Charleston, S.C.; mother Jean MacGregor of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brother Tom MacGregor of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister Denise Van Pelt Ellis of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; nephew Alex Van Pelt, his wife Brooke and their children Payton, Paige and Jack of Green Bay, WI; nephew Andrew Ellis of New York, N.Y.; aunt Lois Graver of Hilton Head, S.C.; his late sister-in-law's husband Austin Pullé, Esq. of Singapore; niece Roshani Pullé, Esq., her husband Tom Inwood and their daughter Evangeline of London, England; nephew Julian Pullé of Leamington, England; sister-in-law Dr. Caroline Chiles and her husband Willis Slane of Lewisville, N.C.; sister-in-law Dr. Catherine Chiles and her husband Dr. Pieter Joost Van Wattum of Hamden, CT; sister-in-law Julia Chiles of Norfolk, Virginia; brother-in-law Christian Chiles, Esq. and his wife Patricia Holt, Esq. of Norfolk, VA.; and nephews and niece Noah, Chloe, and Cooper Chiles of Norfolk, Virginia.
