Suzanne Claudia Duhamel Tignor

Suzanne Tignor Obituary

HAMPTON - Suzanne Claudia Duhamel Tignor died Wednesday evening, April 5, 2006, at her home in Fox Hill. Suzanne's life was full, and in many ways self-crafted. She concentrated on her spiritual journey, created a strong, balanced family life for her husband, her children and her grandchildren, developed herself professionally and made strong, lasting friendships. Suzanne was a long time member of the Williamsburg Friends Meeting. For many years she was convener of the Faith and Practice Committee. At her death she was co-clerk of the meeting. She practiced her Quaker faith in her daily life and looked to the light of God for guidance and discipline. A vibrant, faithful friend, a self-taught gifted cook, a gracious host and a serious steward of the environment (she picked up trash during each walk on Grandview beach), Suzanne left the world better than she found it in many ways. She pursued learning and as an adult, completed her bachelor degree at Hampton University and masters degree in Social Work at VCU, and was licensed as a Clinical Social Worker. She practiced extensively as a psychotherapist in both public and private settings. She brought to that vocation not only training and skill, but love, compassion and understanding. Suzanne's most important work was being the partner of her husband Rhet for 44 years. That and the birthing and raising of their three children always came first in her heart and mind. The family is indebted to Dr. Mark Ellis and all of the members of his medical team, and to Ms. Cynthia Williams, RN, of the Sentara Hospice for the excellent medical care, human compassion and loving kindness they extended to Suzanne. Suzanne leaves behind to treasure their time with her, her husband Rhet; her son, Edward and his wife, Shyami; her daughter, Emily Keenum and her husband, Brook; and her son, Jim and his wife, Lauri. In addition Suzanne deeply loved her six grandchildren, Jack, Mira, Will, Ben, Niky and Sam. Suzanne maintained a strong, vibrant relationship with her college roommate and traveling companion, Susanne Tignor Kolpa. She felt deep love for her Aunt Lucille who along with Lucille's recently departed husband, Laurent Desrosiers, raised Suzanne after the death of her parents. She is also survived by a sister, Madeleine Cavalarro; a brother, Marcel Duhamel; and very loved first cousins, Larry Desrosiers and Raymond and Claire Leclerc. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on South Armistead Avenue in Hampton. There will be a memorial service at the funeral home chapel at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Suzie Tignor was my friend at Albrook Air Force Base, Panama, Canal Zone in 1965. She came to my house when I was in labor and waited with me until my Lieutenant Peter Jaensch came home to take me to Balboa Hospital.
I always loved her. I am so sorry to learn that she is gone. I hope her spouse, Rhet, her children and grandchildren are well and happy and that they remember her with love and joy.

No one could ever forget Suzanne! She really knew the essence of life on earth! I worked with her many years ago and I have carried many of her theories about life with me on my journey. Any who knew Suzanne knows that she now truly knows all the answers to life's questions; many of which she already knew. Rhet, what a wonderful woman to have chosen as your life's partner and to mother your children. Suzanne is always and forever!

My heart is broken to learn of mrs. Tignors passing. She came into my life when I needed someone the most. I believe that she was sent to me to save me and help me see things more clearly. She saved my life.... I will remember her until the day when we meet again.

Dear Rhet and family,

I always looked forward to making contact and exchanging comments with Suzanne. She was a woman of many talents, most of all, making one feel connected to her and what she was doing. I feel honored to have known her and her positive outlook. I am so very sorry to be missing the visitation and services as I am out of town at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Suzanne was an angel here on earth. She touched every life she entered in such a profound but gentle way. Suzanne was a co worker at the Peninsula Health Center who touched my life while I greived the loss of my first child 29 years ago.I will always be grateful for her empathy and intuitive understanding of that loss. She helped me heal and move forward. God bless you and hold you gently as you accept her physical passing. But please know the joy and memories she leaves with each of us is eternal.

I send my deepest thoughts for peace and knowing the joy Suzanne brought to the many she met in her life walk. I was always touched by her genuine care for others, the depth of her faith, and the solid committments she made to her family. I am so thankful that I was allowed time to know her and to share the faith journey through all our Friends gatherings. My life is better for being touch by her. She is truely a woman who will remain forever in my mind and heart. Peace my friend. Let the light surround you and hold you.
