Virginius was my teacher at Mass Bay Community College in the early 2000's. I can't begin to express my gratitude to him for all the knowledge he bestowed on me. I learned so much from him and for that I am forever grateful. I am just now learning of his passing. My condolences to his family.

I had the absolute privilege to have Dr. Thornton as my professor. I was just googling his name, as I remember him always over the Martin Luther King holiday. To see an obituary pop up in my search took my breath away. My deepest condolences to his beloved family. He fill never be forgotten. Rest In Peace dear professor. Best regards, Ellen Love-Kane

I was fortunate to have been a history instructor colleague of Virginius between 1996 and 2013 at MassBay CC. On so many occasions, he enhanced my understanding the experience of African Americans in the Nation's 20th century. I also will remember Virginius for his kind and caring manner. I have just learned of Virginius's death and am so saddened. As a colleague of Virginius at MassBay, I knew him to be deeply committed, consistently generous and kind, and with a wonderful sense of humor. A moment that I will always cherish was celebrating the election of Barak Obama to the presidency. Virginius invited me and my whole family to the celebration. I was proud to share the evening with him.

Professor Thornton was a truly gracious and supportive colleague from whom I learned so much. His thoughtful approach to everything made him a role model to many. I will miss him dearly.

My deepest sympathy to the family, who, at great personal sacrifice, cared so diligently for Virginius the last several months of his life, to his students from Hampton University and other institutions where he taught to whom he was a mentor and a friend, and to all who benefitted from his struggles and contributions as a Civil Rights Leader in the state and national arenas.
