William Galloway Obituary

On August 29, 2018 Ltc. William W. Galloway, Jr. passed away in Newport News at the age of 88. William was raised just outside Washington, NC. in Blounts Creek. Born on September 29, 1929 just days before the stock market crash, he was the son of a tobacco farmer. He joined the Navy, the Air Force, then the Army, and made his way out of the country to Germany to serve in the post WWII period only weeks after marrying the love of his life, Constance Dales. She predeceased him in April of this year following 64 years of marriage. Each trip to Germany in the 1950s brought a daughter. William was predeceased by daughter Kathryn Anne (Doyle), and leaves to mourn his passing Carol Jeanne (Llewellyn). His Army career also took him to posts in Virginia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Korea, Georgia, and the Vietnam war. He received multiple honors and awards including the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Upon retirement William was able to enjoy less demanding pursuits. He and Connie owned and operated the Strawberry Patch Antiques in Hampton for over twenty years. He also worked tirelessly for many years officiating golf tournaments and leading rules training for the USGA. William was a skilled fisherman, wood craftsman, gardener, cook, golfer and reader of anything written by Louis L'Amour. He did his daily crossword puzzles in ink right up until his passing. He loved helping his wife feed the birds, thwart the squirrels and spoil his cats. He was a true gentleman of the South and loved his family and his country. His loyalty and loving counsel will be greatly missed. Joining Carol Jeanne and her husband Donald Llewellyn in mourning the passing of William are his dear niece Carol Joan Powell and nephew David Powell (Amy). The family thanks the loving staff at Warwick Forest for all their kindness and support. A ceremony to honor the life and service of Ltc. Galloway will be celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery on a future date. Expressions of sympathy may be made to honor William's memory to the Cat Corner, 85 Fulton Street, Hampton, VA 23663.
