William Parks Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. William Rodney 'Bill' Parks passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 21, 2015. Dr. Parks was an esteemed orthodontist serving the greater Hampton Roads community for over 40 years. Dr. Parks opened his private practice in Newport News in 1978, eventually growing to Williamsburg and Smithfield. Dr. Parks was born and raised in Gaffney, South Carolina, and attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, where he met the love of his life, Sandra. Dr. Parks earned a Doctor in Dental Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia, where he was inducted into both Sigma Zeta and Omicron Kappa Upsilon science honor societies. He completed a two-year orthodontic residency at Boston University, where he earned a Master of Science in Dentistry. After two years of practicing orthodontics in the military, Dr. Parks opened his private practice on the Peninsula. Dr. Parks was a Board Certified Orthodontist and was also a distinguished member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the American College of Dentists. Locally, he was a fellow of the Virginia Dental Association and a past president of both the Peninsula Dental Society and the Tidewater Orthodontic Society. Outside his professional life, Dr. Parks was the past president of the Virginia War Museum. Previously, he served as the chairman of the board at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, a member of the board at Hampton Roads Academy, and a member of the Warwick Rotary. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Bill spread joy and happiness to all he met. In addition to his passion for his patients and colleagues at Parks Orthodontics, Bill could often be found in his garage, working on his collection of cars and motorcycles and a variety of other hobbies. Bill delighted in exploring the open road, traveling all over the world with his fellow car and motorcycle enthusiasts. He relished in having his family and friends gather at his home on the James River to celebrate all of life's moments or just to enjoy a quiet sunset. Those who have been fortunate enough to know Bill have lost a dear friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; as well as his three adored children and their spouses, Allison and JT Hale, Meredith and Randy Owen, and Will and Lisa Parks. Also left missing him are his precious grandchildren, Sidney and June Hale, and Trip and Hugh Parks, and his devoted golden retriever, Dandy. Bill is further survived by his mother, Myra McMillan Parks, and his sisters and brother-in-law, Lynn Evatt and Debbie and Rhobie Nowlin. He was preceded in death by his father, June Leonidas Parks. Additionally, Bill was greatly blessed with a wonderful extended family, cherished friends, and many trusted colleagues in his work, including his superb staff at Parks Orthodontics. A celebration of Bill's life will be held in the coming months. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal School, Hampton Roads Academy, or Camp Victory Junction (www.victoryjunction.org). Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.

Dr. Parks (Bill) treated me with adult orthodontics while in my last couple years in the Naval Submarine Service (USS Atlanta SSN 712 and USS Norfolk SSN 714) where I was a computer technician during new construction @ NNSⅅ -

I'll always remember his passion for Porsche sports cars with that poster of all their models he had in his Denbigh office and of course that wonderful aquarium. Still enjoying the smile he gave me 50 years later with some surgical help from Dr. Tankersley.

Sandy and family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Bill was such a wonderful person, and one of the biggest influences of my life (and my brother Lee).
Back in the early 80's I got the Pleasure of racing with Bill on his sailboat many, many times and some of my best memories are of sailing with Bill.
He was the coolest man I had ever met, with a thousand watt personality, who lived life to its fullest. Competitive but wanted to have fun, successful but never pretentious, he listened to people and made them feel like they were the most important person in the room. He was just a really neat guy!
I know your hearts are aching, but hope the memories and sentiments of all he touched are of comfort.
God Bless

Dr. Parks did my braces from 1980 to 1982. He gave me a job at 16 yrs old in 1986 and a recommendation to dental school in 1991. I will be forever grateful to his support and guidance. I will mourn his passing greatly. He gave me advice when I bought my own practice directly out of dental school in 1996 at his encouragement. I even have my patients sign the ceiling like he did. May God be with you all!

You and your family are in our prayers. Sorry to hear of your loss. Lisel and I learned how to race a sailboat alongside you and Bill many years ago on the boat of a mutual friend. We will remember Bill as eager, enthusiastic and ready for the next challenge Our hearts are with you.

Oh my gosh, where do I begin? Our deepest sympathies to Sandy and the Parks family, and also to Parks Orthodontics Staff, especially Ellen. What a shock, there are just no words. I think the sun lost a little of its brightness. Dr. Parks put braces on all three of my children. He was an extraordinary healthcare provider, my children's favorite. He was always smiling and taught everyone around him to really enjoy their life. His attitude was contagious! He made each child he took care of feel like they were his only patient ever. Dr. Parks would listen to their stories, ask them questions, encourage them to do well in school and to set high goals for themselves. We spent ten years of our lives with Dr. Parks and he had a profound effect on all of us. We have so many amazing, happy memories of gerbils in exercise balls, Sunny, limo rides, pinball games, Water Country, Ocean Breeze Park, Roller Skating, signing the ceiling and bright green pants. Dr. Parks made braces fun for the whole family. He was so proud of all of you, his family at home and his family at work and he loved you all beyond measure, and we loved him, too. He is gone way too soon, but, will never be forgotten. Mary, Bob, Bonnie, Jeremy and Mindy Pancoast

Bill and I met on the first day of our freshman year at Presbyterian College in 1961. We remained close friends for the next 54 years. In fact, he and Sandy and their kids hosted Francie and I on our very first date in 1986. I so very much enjoyed riding bikes with him on Kyle's annual charity trip. Next year's ride just won't be the same. I am devastated and saddened beyond words at his passing. Forgive me, but I'm not sure I will ever make sense of it.
