William Pointer Obituary

William Joseph Pointer, age 93, of Gloucester, passed away on October 6, 2023, at home surrounded by family. Joe was born on February 3, 1930, to Michael Harvey Pointer, Sr., and Emma Sue Kemp Pointer. His parents' brothers, Mike and Jimmy, and Sister, Elsie Lee, preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Nan; and his sons, Glenn (Debora) and Owen (Teresa); his grandchildren, Chris (Paige) and Steven; three step-grandchildren, Brian Hill, Casey Hill, and Taelor Antunes and four step-grandchildren Carrington, Adelise, Gabriel and Zoe; sister Kathleen Bristow; sister-in-law Wyolene Pointer and many nieces and nephews. Joe graduated from Botetourt High School and was one of the last four surviving members of the Class of 1947. He was a lifelong member of Bellamy United Methodist Church, serving on various committees. He was a former Middle Peninsula Director of Chesapeake Bank. He had been a very active member of the Gloucester Farm Bureau for many years. He was a member of the York River Circle of the King's Daughters and Sons. His dedicated vocation was farming. He and his brother, Jimmy, bought their first tractor when Joe was fifteen. Even before that, they salvaged old parts and made a tractor. He and Jimmy had a machine shop, and in the early years, many farmers went to them for repair work. They also did several mechanical projects for the Newport News Shipyard. Joe had a deep love of the land and great joy in seeing crops flourish. In addition to farming, Joe loved to travel. He and his wife visited most of the States, over 50 countries, and went to all seven continents. They enjoyed traveling with family and friends, making some lasting friendships. He enjoyed times with his family and playing cards with close friends. He also enjoyed fellowship with his many farmer friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 9, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home. The funeral service officiated by Pastor Ed Walker will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Bellamy United Methodist Church, 4870 Chestnut Fork Road, Gloucester, VA 23061, and interment will follow in the church cemetery.
