William Taylor Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - William "Bill" Redd Taylor, died at his home on March 3, 2018 due to complications following a stroke. He was 80 years old and had been a Peninsula resident since 1972. Born January 9, 1938 in Richmond, he graduated from Benedictine High School in 1956. He held several jobs in sales after high school including the Richmond Times Dispatch, Jostens class rings and Xerox, and also served 6 months in the Army, all while enjoying his real passion of art, drawing and painting on the side. In 1966 he married the love of his life, Gale Page Taylor and soon after, devoted his full-time career to wildlife art. He became a successful wildlife artist with many accolades to his name including having his art displayed in the Smithsonian Institution of Fine Arts, being commissioned by the telephone company to do the cover of the Virginia telephone book, and receiving many "Best in Show" awards when he would exhibit his art. He had a deep love of wildlife art, nature, good music, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary (Polly) Redd Taylor and James Lawrence Taylor; his oldest brother, James Lawrence Taylor, Jr., all of Richmond; and his loving wife of 49 years, Gale Page Taylor, of Newport News. He is survived by his son, William (Will) Redd Taylor II of Denver, CO, his daughter, Erin Schroeder (Ty), and his only grandson, Ryan Schroeder, all of Casper, WY; his sister, Nancy Ford of Newport News and his brother, Charles F. Taylor (Sharon) of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Peninsula Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 6 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday March 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park, with Rev. Bill Powell of Village Christian Fellowship in Suffolk officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Village Christian Fellowship, 3013 Bridge Road, Suffolk VA 23435 or charity of your choice.

Mr. Taylor, I know that God is asking you to paint the sunsets and the sunrises, because you always got "the sky right." I am privileged to be the caretaker of three originals and several prints of yours--they are not mine, they are yours. The originals surround me in my family room. Thank you for showing me a better way to see the world.

I remember Billy as a boy with a passion for horses. His sister, Nancy, was a dear friend and I spent many happy days with her in their Richmond home. He was a sweet child, well behaved, and never a pest as some younger brothers can be. I regret that I lived so far from Richmond after high school that I couldn't keep up with the Taylor boys.

Many years ago I taught school at Quantico with Gale. Then she married her special guy Bill and lived in Richmond. I remember Bill's beautiful artwork and wished I could afford to purchase one piece. His talent was amazing. I will always remember Gale and Bill as a young couple starting out in life. I am sad that they are now gone, but I will always be glad that our paths crossed long ago. My condolences to Will, Erin, and the rest of the family.

Will & family,
You are in my prayers and thoughts. May God give you peace in your time of loss. Memories are forever keep them close to heart. Remember in John 11:35, "Jesus wept." It is good to weep. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4 God bless each of you. Grace, Peace, Prayer

Dear Will, Erin and family,
I was dismayed to read today of your Dad's passing....so soon after Gayle.
In addition to having been a friend of the Page family, I am proud to own two beautiful prints by William Redd Taylor. I enjoyed his Facebook postings as well.
May the warm memories you share of his life give you consolation and may the fact that he gave such beauty to so many people ease the pain of saying goodbye.
Sincerely,
Dottie Figg
