Charles Elmo Stevens Jr. of Charlottesville died on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the age of 89. "Mo" was born May 2, 1926 in Charlottesville to Charles Elmo and Hellon Goodyear Stevens. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Sarah "Toddy" Stevens; and his brother, Noel Stevens.He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Carolyn Stevens and grandson, Austen, of Louisa; his daughter and son-in-law, Alice and David Marshall of Charlottesville and his grandchildren, Gardner Marshall and his wife, Jennifer, Elizabeth "Alex" Marshall, and David Marshall Jr.; and his son, Brady Fletcher Stevens of Charlottesville. Many thanks go to his loving and devoted friend Katherine "Boo" Dulaney.Mo loved running and ran in several marathons. He was an avid naturalist and started The Turkey Sag Bird Watching Club with John H. Grey Jr. which later became The Monticello Bird Club. In 2014 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors for his invaluable explorations and extensive notes documenting many of Virginia's most special places and species. He collected and identified over 25,000 native plant specimens for the Harvill-Stevens Herbarium at Longwood University. His work also contributed to the book, Flora of Virginia.Mo was a graduate of UVa and a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He was a veteran and POW of World War II.He had a wonderful, wry sense of humor which he maintained until the end.Memorial contributions may be made to The Virginia Flora Project.All friends and family are invited to Alice and David Marshall's home at 426 Second Street on Saturday, October 17, 2015 between 12 and 2 p.m. to celebrate and remember Mo's life.
