Adolphus Hailstork Obituary

Adolphus C. Hailstork

Adolphus C. Hailstork, 94, of Ithaca, New York, passed away om Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

Dolly as he was affectionately known by those closest to him, was born on September 9, 1915, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Adolphus C. Hailstork Sr. and the former Laura Richardson.

As a child the family moved from Maryland to New Jersey and finally to upstate New York. Dolly graduated from Elmira Free Academy. He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 19 and served in West Point, New York, prior to World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1938.

Dolly was a longtime resident of Ithaca and loved the town and its people and was active in many local endeavors including overseeing his father's Laundromat on Corn Street, one of the first African American owned businesses in Ithaca. Dolly was an excellent athlete and avid bowler even serving as a past president of the Ithaca Bowler's Association.

Nothing gave him greater joy than his association with the Brothers of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Cornell University. Dolly retired as the fraternity's cook after 32 years of service. From 1960 until 1992, he mentored hundreds of young men and impressively remembered their names, hometowns and girlfriends years after they graduated. People who met Dolly never forgot him and he never forgot them. In 2002, the fraternity held a reception in New York City celebrating their honorary brother and beloved cook. Fraternity members spanning 50 years attended the event. It was a great memory for Dolly and the Brothers alike. His spirit, wit, smile and infectious laughter will be forever in the memory and hearts of those he touched. May God rest his soul.

In addition to his parents, Dolly was preceded in death by his sister, Acqullia; and his second wife, Phyllis Hailstork.

He is survived by his most recent wife, Lyria Brown Hailstork of Charlottesville, Virginia; children, Adolphus C. Hailstork III of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Lyria Belle Hailstork of Charlottesville, Virginia and Roger C. (Rosa) Hailstork of Oceanside, California; along with grandchildren, Tyler Catherine Hailstork and Peyton C. Hailstork.

Calling hours are from 1 until 3 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Bangs Funeral Home, 209 West Green Street, Ithaca, New York.

A memorial service will be held following at 6 p.m. the visitation at Sigma Pi Fraternity, 730 University Avenue.

I am very sorry about Dolly's passing. He was a nice man ~ always so friendly and chatty when we ran into each other. Dolly goes back a long ways with my family ~ he was friends with my Uncle Lou Barnard, and he bowled with both my step-father, Bill Miller, and my Dad, Bob Gombash.
My thoughts are with all of Dolly's family.
Sincerely,

Sheila Buckingham

Dolly will always be remembered by those who have met him. He was a great bowler all the way up until about 92. He was a jolly man who after cooking for 32 yrs at Cornell still loved to eat but preferably at a restaurant (red lobster was his favorite)you will be missed but your memory will live on.

About 10 years back Sigma Pi Alum had a gathering in NYC in the Doll's honor and to help with his retirement fund. Scores of Cornell graduates from many decades and from all over the country came back to attend to visit with him and re-live fond memories. Such a great turnout was a testimonial itself to how many lives he touched over the years. He will be missed -- Dave Miller '71

For four steadfast years, "The Doll" always had a special diet late meal ready for me when I was on Cornell's lightweight crew team. When I think back on the particularly great people I've been blessed to know over my 60 years, Dolly Hailstork ranks right near the top.

Many fond memories from the Cornell Summer Surveying Camp at Cayuta Lake in the 50's and 60's.Doll could make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich taste out of this world. How he could make so many fantastic meals for students in such a rustic setting is an insperation to any cook or chef.

Mr. Hailstork was a super neighbor. Our familys lived very close by on Ridgecrest Rd. for a long while. My sister and I babysat his kids. He and our Dad got along so well. Dolly was a special person with a big, big heart. He always bought our girl scout cookies. I hope that others can remember their former neighbors with love. Rest in Peace, Dolly...you were one of a kind and will be missed. Sally (Tanner) Quick...one of the 4 Tanner girls on Ridgecrest.
