Almarin Phillips Obituary

Almarin Phillips, former professor of the University of Virginia and member of the Virginia Milk Commission, died Sunday, August 26, 2006.

He was born March 13, 1925, in Port Jervis, New York, son of the late Wendell Phillips and Hazel Billett.

He served in World War II, received a B.S. and an M.A. degree from University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from Harvard. He taught at the University of Virginia from 1956 until 1963 and at the University of Pennsylvania and elsewhere until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Phillips consulted on major antitrust cases including AT&T, IBM, Alcoa, PPG Industries, Dow Chemical Co., CitiCorp, Nintendo, Netscape, Litton Industries, Johnson & Johnson, and Northwest Airlines. He also consulted for the Department of Justice, the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Trade Commission and the Office of Technology Assessment. He was Co-Director of the President's Commission on Financial Structure and Regulation, a Public Member of the National Commission on Electronic Funds Transfer, a Member of the Economic Advisory Committee of the National Commission for the Revision of Antitrust Laws and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Information Technology and Financial Services of the Office of Technology Assessment, U.S. Congress. He wrote eight books and more than a hundred articles and notes in professional publications.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Behrle Phillips of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania; by four sons, F. Peter Phillips of Montclair, New Jersey, Thomas R. Phillips of Scottsville, Virginia, David J. Phillips of Toronto, Canada, and Charles S. Phillips of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania; by a daughter, Elizabeth L. Phillips of Pittsford, New York; by three stepsons, Andrew T. Greenberg of Philadelphia; Benjamin F. Behrle, of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and Joshua Behrle, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; by a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Sanchez of Forks, Washington; and by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his first wife, Dorothy B. Phillips. His second wife, Carole C. Phillips, died in 2005, and his eldest son, A. Paul Phillips, died in early 2006.

A memorial service for Mr. Phillips will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2006, at the Merion Tribute House, 625 Hazelhurst Avenue, Merion Station, PA 19066 (www.tributehouse.com).

Gifts in honor of Mr. Phillips may be sent to the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation or to the Philadelphia Free Library Foundation.
