Ann Angle Obituary

Ann Monroe Angle

February 16, 1932 - April 26, 2021

Ann Monroe Angle, 89, of Charlottesville, Va., died peacefully on April 26, 2021. Born on February 16, 1932, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of William Nathaniel Angle and Mae Baldwin Angle.

Known affectionately by her grandchildren, family and friends as "Annie", she was warm and vivacious, making a lasting impression on everyone she met. Annie grew up in Rocky Mount, Va. and attended Southern Seminary before entering William & Mary College in 1950, where she met and later married Frank Folsom Smith. They lived in Charlottesville before moving in 1959 to Sarasota, Fla., a mecca of mid-century art and architecture. While there, Annie began her lifelong love of the arts. After returning to Charlottesville in 1974, she earned a degree in Art History from Mary Baldwin College. She then worked as an independent art consultant advising local institutions, including the Omni Hotel and Martha Jefferson Hospital, on art acquisition programs. Through her work, Annie befriended many local artists and craftspeople at McGuffey Hill and elsewhere. She believed in the healing power of art and loved nothing better than being in the company of friends and family, surrounded by her wonderful collection of paintings, ceramics and sculpture. Annie grew up in a family dedicated to public service and she believed it was important to try and "give back" if you could. In so many ways she did just that.

Annie was sadly preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Laura Winn Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Frances Dorrien-Smith and husband, Jamie, of London, England; her son, Bill Smith and wife, Amy, of Raleigh, N.C.; her grandchildren, Patrick, Amanda, Kelsey, Eric, Eleanor, William, Erika, Summer and Annabel; and her eight great-grandchildren.

To all the many friends and helpers who have given love and care to Annie during her final years we wish to say thank you, with special gratitude to Janaki Lessard.

A private memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held for family members and close friends on June 26, 2021.
