Betsy Carr Obituary

Betsy Rose Carr

October 2, 1941 - January 13, 2022

Betsy Rose Carr, 80, of Crozet, Virginia died after a brief illness on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by her husband and both daughters.

Born October 2, 1941 in Richmond, Virginia, she was the daughter of Mary Bryant (Cox) Rose and Paul William Rose. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sisters Carol Clark and Paula Compton.

Betsy's life led her to travel the world. In 1952, Betsy's father's State Department assignment took their family to Nepal where she enrolled at Woodstock School in Mussoorie, India. She graduated in 1958, and their family returned to the U.S. She spent a year studying piano and organ at Westminster Choir College and then enrolled at Madison College (now James Madison University). After her 1962 graduation, she taught elementary school in Fairfax County, Virginia. In 1964, Betsy and Wesley were married. Wesley's U.S. Army career took Betsy and their family on many years of travel across the U.S. and to France, Thailand, Bolivia, Germany, and Norway.

After the family returned to the U.S. in the early 1980's, Betsy earned a Masters in English from George Mason University, with a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). In 1989, Betsy and Wesley relocated to the Charlottesville area, and she worked at Lynchburg College as an Instructor for English as a Second Language. In 2004, Betsy and Wesley settled in Crozet where she lived until her passing.

Betsy enjoyed making music and played the piano throughout her life. She sang with the Augusta Choral Society and the Crozet Community Chorus and played bells with Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church bell choir. While in Norway, Betsy studied the painting technique "rosemaling" and created many beautiful painted pieces which have graced her family's home for decades.

Betsy had deep and abiding faith. Betsy was part of a church community everywhere she lived, and she and Wesley have been members of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 30 years. Betsy showered love and devotion on her family - her husband of 57 years, daughters, beloved granddaughters, sisters, many nieces and nephews and extended family. She often shared fond memories of her parents' families from Covington and Independence. She made and sustained many dear friendships throughout her life, in particular her Tri-Sigma sorority sisters, her close friends from her family's years abroad, friends at Wesley Memorial, "Curry Club" friends with shared connections to Woodstock or India, and the "Muttley Crew" in Crozet who gathered for lunch and laughter.

Betsy is survived by her husband, Wesley D. Carr of Crozet, Va.; her daughter, Carolyn Carr and husband, Jonathan Sellman of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and her daughter, Anne Carr-Schmid and husband, Kevin Schmid of Succasunna, New Jersey; granddaughters, Sylvia Rose Sellman Carr of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Megan Schmid of Succasunna, New Jersey; sisters, Dorothy Weichbrod of Tucson, Arizona, and Nancy Bryant of Durham, North Carolina; and her sister-in-law, Mary Lou Carr of Richmond, Virginia.

The family gives thanks to Dr. Erica Strubel and her staff for their many years of skilled and compassionate care they gave to Betsy.

A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation, 500 Martha Jefferson Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22911 www.mjhfoundation.org, or to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1901 Thomson Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903 or to a charity of your choice.

Lost track of Betsy, but she was a great tutor and helper at Blue Ridge ESL Council, so I wanted you to know how much I admired her work.
And she was a lovely, principled person. She had us over to use Wesley Memorial“s extensive parish hall downstairs more than once. Very warm and lovely person.

Betsy was a "best friend" dearly loved by anyone who met her. I am so lucky to have been able to spend time with her, usually chatting over lunch. Love to all of her family. June
