Calvin Ness Obituary

Calvin Donald Korab Ness, 13, of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away on May 10, 2023, after sustaining massive head trauma from a tragic accident during baseball pregame warmups. On the baseball field, where he spent most of his life, he was affectionately known as "C."

Calvin's closely knit and loud family, Elizabeth Korab, Jason Ness, Robinson Ness, 12, and Mallory Ness, 9 remain committed to staying a family of five. His home was also filled with the energy of his three treasured pets, Boz, Moose, and Scamp. The family is at peace that when his life was taken, he was not in pain and was doing something he loved.

Calvin's life was filled with many loving & adoring family members, Holly and Wes Korab of Nellysford, Va., Penny Porter of Champaign, Ill., Taylor Korab, Jake Thomas, and Alexandra Thomas of Lake Bluff, Ill., Becky, Jeff, Maggie, Evan, and Olivia Rhymer of Evansville, Ind.; many extended family members in the Midwest, and the many friends in Charlottesville that became his family. Calvin is survived by his great-grandma, Patricia Backus, of Florida, and was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Don and Peggy Porter, George and Janina Korab, John Backus, and his cousin, Evie Thomas.

Calvin attended Charlottesville City Schools since kindergarten and played in several area baseball leagues. His mom had the joy of being his principal during elementary school, while his dad coached him in baseball when he played in Central Little League. Calvin's brother, Robinson, was also his teammate.

Those who knew Calvin well described him as caring, thoughtful, and mischievous. He loved working on various projects with his Dad, his Papa, or for his family, such as fixing his mom's baseball glove. His last act of service was donating his organs. Although it was not initially expected that his heart and lungs could be donated because of the sustained trauma, due to the efforts of the First Responders and Calvin's teenage determination, they were able to be donated as well. His family and close loved ones were by his side during the Honor Walk to the Operating Room. All organs were successfully recovered from Calvin.

Calvin will be cremated and his ashes will be distributed at places he loved and places he wanted to visit. A celebration of life will be held at the Charlottesville High School baseball field on Monday, May 29, 2023, at 3 p.m.

His parents are moved by the volume of offers from across the community to contribute in some way to Calvin's legacy. They are establishing the C-will Fund for Buford Athletics with the goal of developing a robust booster program that will allow all Charlottesville City middle school students to have access to high quality, well supported school sports activities. It is their vision that with these funds, Buford Middle School Athletics will have the infrastructure, facilities, and enthusiasm to bring together our Charlottesville community for decades to come.

For more information on the vision and how to contribute as well as additional details for the celebration of life, please visit C-will.org.

The family is grateful for the love and support from the Charlottesville City Schools and the Charlottesville baseball community. The family wants to extend gratitude and appreciation to the First Responders team that supported Calvin; the compassionate care from the UVA Pediatric ICU team that allowed as much closure as was possible; and LifeNet that delicately handled the organ donation process.

The goal in life is not to live forever but to create something that will. – Juice WRLD

Although I did not know Calvin or the family, my deepest sympathy for such a young life lost. Sounds like he was a great kid and in the end, he gave the best gift of all. My daughter is a nurse at UVA and has participated in the walk many times, a true honor for a courageous family. May God keep you in his blessings at this time
