Charles Olin "C.O." Jones Sr.
Charles Olin "C.O." Jones , Sr., 90, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009, after several months of declining health. He was born August 30, 191 8, in Jonesville, Virginia.
He was employed by the Virginia Department of Highways for over 45 years, serving in various positions throughout the state, and retired in 1980 as Resident Engineer of the Louisa Residency. He served in World War II, the Reserves and National Guard, retiring in 1971 with 28 years of service and the rank of Colonel. He served as President of the Virginia National Guard Association in 1988 and 1989. He was a Charter Member (1947) of the Rich Creek, Virginia, Lions Club and a member of six other clubs throughout the state, serving as President, Zone Chairman and Deputy District Governor. He was secretary of the Louisa County Lions Club approximately 20 years. He received the Lion of the Year award twice, and was the recipient of the first Melvin Jones Fellow Award given by the Louisa Lions Club.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Bland Masonic Lodge and served as Master of the Lodge in 1951 receiving his 60 Year Membership Certificate in 2002. He received a 50
Year Membership Certificate from the Scottish Rite Shrine in October, 2008 and a 60 year Membership Certificate from the American Legion in March, 2008. He was also a member of the Military Order of World Wars, Sons of Confederate Veterans and was a charter member of the Louisa County Santa Council.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Louisa Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and served as Treasurer for 17 years. He was also Treasurer of the Goshen Baptist Association and in October, 2007, he was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for 20 years of faithful service. He was also a member of the Executive Committee.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, Olive J. and Olin W. Jones; his son, Charles 0. Jones II and his grandson, Charles 0. Jones III. Also preceding him was a brother, Earl V. Jones; two sisters, Viola Daugherty and Helen Anderson.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Nancy, a much loved stepson, Robert R. Mitchell and wife, Teresa, of Mineral, Virginia; and three very special grandchildren, Zachary Mitchell of Richmond, Virginia, Kali and Gabriel Mitchell of Mineral, Virginia. Other survivors are two sisters, Anne Wilson of Orleans, Indiana, and Mariella Carroll of Orlando, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Louisa Baptist Church. The Reverend Murphy Terry and the Reverend Lowell Wright will officiate. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa, with a military ceremony.
Family will receive friends from 2 until 4 and from 6 until 8 p.m. and a Masonic Service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Woodward Funeral Home, 200 Fredericksburg Avenue, Louisa, Virginia 23093.
Active Pallbearers will be Kenneth Smith, Aubrey Phillips, Tucker Swanson and nephews Loran Wilson, Dave Henderson, Kenny Boiling, Randy Poole, Ronnie Bush.
Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Louisa County Lions Club.
