Chuck Lewis Obituary

Chuck Lewis, Entrepreneur, Downtown Developer, and Author

Charlottesville entrepreneur and author Chuck Lewis, 70, left for his final sales call on Monday, May 3, 2010, and will reunite with his wife, Kathy, in the great produce warehouse beyond.

Best known as the co-owner of Lewis Produce with his wife and later Kathy's Produce, which he named in her memory, Lewis was a homegrown product of the Charlottesville area. Born near Gordonsville in an area informally known as Quarlestown, Lewis enlisted in the United States Army Airborne as a teen. He went on to work in the food services industry as one of the first black managers at several corporations in New Jersey.

In the mid-1970s, Lewis returned to Virginia with his wife and family with their last $250 to found Lewis Produce. Eight years later, the company was grossing $11 million. Tragedy struck two years after the couple retired, when Kathy, 42, died suddenly of an asthma attack. Later, Lewis repurchased the produce company they had sold, renaming it Kathy's Produce.

In 1995, Lewis sold Kathy's Produce to devote himself full time to developing commercial and residential property on the Downtown Mall. Among his legacies is York Place, an innovative retail and residential space named for the Virginia slave who traveled as a navigator with United States heroes Lewis and Clark as they explored the American West.

Chuck and Kathy Lewis are survived by their loving and devoted children, Leah Trager and her husband, Joe, and Charley Lewis and his wife, Tina; their precious grandchildren, Miles and Xavier Trager and Elek and Lucy Lewis, and another grandchild soon to arrive. With Grandma Kathy and Papa Chuck is grandbaby Ronin Lewis. He is also survived by his brother, James Flannigan and his wife, Jean; his nieces, Christi and her husband, Mike Harris, and their children, and Nedra and her husband, Charles Fleming, and their children; and Joan Miller, longtime friend and employee of 28 years. He was grateful to have had so many valued employees and longtime customers over the years.

Lewis published his memoirs in All the Riches of Job: A True Story of Success and What Came After, which recounts his business successes and the tragic personal losses he suffered along the way, and the spiritual questions that resulted.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Covenant Church, 1025 East Rio Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Hope Community Center, 341 11th Street Northwest, Charlottesville, VA 22903, www.hopecommunitycenter.org.

Charles, did not realize you´d been gone this long. I met you through your Aunt Alice whom I had grown to love. Thank you so much for your many great works in Charlottesville. I know your family remembers you with love and will never forget you. Rest on, in Peace.

A great man, who in hindsight, beyond the torrent at least, I respect well beyond most. L.L.L., and Charlie represent an abrupt course change in my journey of this so called life. Not a day goes by without at least a brief acknowledgement of the profound catalyst they were. I mourn vicarious, I mourn in kind. This man of men whos weight few know, I quietly send my heartfelt sorrows to all those more directly impacted. On a whim I looked in on a world lost long ago, and in a flash it was yesterday, and old times were fresh again. God speed Charlie. I wish L and C a speedy mourning and a long memory. I will certainly never forget you. Cheers!

Chuck we miss you. You were a pioneer at a time that we needed pioneers back in the 70's. Moving forward you never let your family or your city down. Against all odds you proved yourself and provided a multitude of Goodwill to one and all.

Uncle Chuck,
It has been so long since I have seen you, oh how I have missed you and my cousins. So far behind the times am I.
My son Nick was on the computer looking at face book and I said, wow can you look up my family for me, that is incredible, I was so excited, I saw your face and a picture of Aunt Kathy, what a joy. I thought I may finally get in touch with you again. Then another page came up and I hit the floor from the tragedy it brought to me! I hope you knew how much I loved you and admired you since I was a little boy!! Unfortunately life is a busy job and the things we desire most are the things that seem to get put aside. Leah and Charley I am sorry and I miss and love you guys very much. Uncle Chuck tell Aunt Kathy hi for me!

Chuck,
You are missed so much. You were a part of my family all of my life. You always reminded me (even when I didnt want to hear it) that there would be 3 people that would always believe and have faith in me...my mom, you and god. Thank you for always being there for my mom for the 30 yrs she worked for you. Thank you for always taking time when I came in the office to see my mother to pull the chair over sit down and tell me how well I was looking and how you always had faith that I was suppose to do something wonderful this life. I am trying my hardest not to let you down. Thank you for always being there for my family especially my mom when she needed it the most..I have such fond memories growing up in the produce company and packing peanut brittle on my vacations. I still cant eat peanut brittle today. We love you and you are missed so much it hurts at times. We know that you are up there with wonderful Kathy smiling down upon us.

Chuck was a part of my family for nearly all of my life. I remember the first years of my mom, Joan, working for Chuck and Kathy back when it was Lewis Produce. Still recall making fruit baskets and running through the warehouses with Charley. Chuck was a father figure in many situations in my life, as a kid growing up, as well as a grown man with children. My heart goes out to Charley, Leah and family, for we all have lost a great person in our lives. I find peace in knowing that Chuck has joined his true love now.

God Bless

This is the third time I've come to this site to sign the guest book and write a message, and I'm still having trouble finding adequate words. Chuck was a good man with many sides. He loved his family, he was tenacious, steady, and he was good to me. As the saying goes, 'behind every successful man is a good woman'. Chuck had two ... Kathy and Joan. To Charley, Leah and family, Charlottesville is a better place because of Chuck. I'll miss his contagious laugh.
Much love and aloha ...

Chuck was a man of extraordinary character, talent and accomplishments, but beyond all of this he had a great heart. I first met him shortly after I moved to Charlottesville when he sold me the best “eggs and tomatoes” in town. That was in the 1970’s and we became and remained friends ever since. He has always been a gracious, generous and wonderful person to know. We will all miss him.

To the Family of Mr. Lewis:

I did not "know" him except through casual conversation; but, I found in him probably the most successful entrepreneur of any color in the Charlottesville area. A quiet cornerstone of the Black community will be sorely missed.

Chuck was a dear friend and I was honored to be able to spend some time with him over the last year of his life. I am happy that we had moments of laughter and joy and that he was able to forget about his pain for even a few minutes. Thank you Chuck for your kindness and for also making me smile. I'm a visualizing you surrounded by Light and Legions of Angels.....you deserve it! To a dear man... love Mala

I have known and admired Uncle Chuck for almost my whole life. I have worked for him at all of his warehouses. I have very fond memories of staying with his mom Elizabeth Winston when his family used to travel to New Jersey. Fond memories of staying with his aunt Alice Johnson during some summers, and staying with his sister Clara when her beloved Waldo passed away. I moved from Va as an adult but all those wonderful family members were always in my thoughts. I recently had a chance to find Uncle Chuck again and got the opportunity to reminisce all the "good" times. I let him know I learned that good things can be accomplished through hard work. I will miss him and all the other family that have passed on. Lots of love and condolences to the family, take care and be well.

Uncle Chuck... you were such a great friend to my Dad and to our family. You were so much more like family to us and always insisted that you were Uncle Chuck to me. I watched you ride motocross with the boys and boy did you give them a run for their money! I saw you at your best when it came to business and the love that you had for your family.
It was truly an honor to have known you and to have had the pleasure of having you in our lives!
We love you and we know that you and Kathy are just as happy as can be once again.
Charley and Leah, my love and prayers go out to both of you for your loss. May God grant you comfort and peace in knowing that there is no more suffering and your wonderful and amazing Dad is sitting with your Mom at the feet of the Lord forever watching over you!!

Chuck,
You were both a friend and mentor to me. I have often thought about and utilized things you taught me about dealing and communicating with people. Your teachings have helped me in sales as well as in my career in Law Enforcement. Many times I have regretted leaving your employment. I can only imagine where I would be had I remained with you and continued learning from you. Even though I haven't talked to you in several years your spirit has always been with me. I know that will continue. Until we meet again may you rest in peace, and give Kathy a big hug from me as well. Your old friend. Jon

To the Family: May God bless you all.
I met Chuck some years ago through his aunt, Alice Johnson. Alice was a dear friend of my daughter, Andrea and of mine also. She spoke lovingly and proudly of her kind nephew whom she called, Johnny. I finally had occasion to meet Johnny and she was right, he was kind. I saw him and talked with him at other times, and on that sad day at Aunt Alice's final services when she left us. I can only say, may God keep you and comfort you at this time and always.

Chuck loved to talk about the What Ifs in life--those little moments that present themselves without fanfare yet change our personal direction forever. Chuck changed my life with his friendship and love and by setting an example for me of how to be true to oneself. He loved his wonderful family so deeply and cared for his friends and his community unlike anyone I have ever known. My heart is both sad and full.

Chuck,
You were a big part of my life for so many years, I'm not sure how I will get along without you. You shared so much wisdom and support for me and my children when we needed it and even when we didn't. You were always there when I just needed to talk or cry. I will never forget the quarters that we would give each other to buy us a chance to "blow off steam". Thank you for everything that you have ever done for me and for being a great friend. Love you and you will never be forgotten.
