After a brief illness, Andrew Blane Murray Boyd of Alton, VA, passed away at VCU Medical Center in Richmond on March 11, 2026.
Andrew (Drew) was born on March 7, 1978 in Charlottesville, VA, the son of James Rice and Abbigail Kuehner Boyd. He is survived by his father, James Boyd and step-mother Angela Stevens Boyd of Charlottesville, VA, brother Colin Bray Kuehner Boyd, of Hardy, VA, sister Elizabeth Caroline Boyd of Charlottesville, VA, and step brother John Frederick Stevens Pifer of Roseland, VA, Uncle John and Aunt Leigh Boyd of Roanoke, VA, Aunt Sally Slaff of South Boston, VA, Uncle Paul Powers Kuehner of Balla Cynwyd, PA, cousin Ashley Slaff of Jenkintown, PA, and cousin Sarah Boyd of Salem, VA. He was preceded in death by his mother Gail Kuehner Rakes, grandparents John and Elizabeth Boyd and Howard and Faye Kuehner.
Drew was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy where he played football and lacrosse. He continued his love for lacrosse at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC where he was a four-year letterman and a business major. In its initial season, the team had only 13 players, all of whom remain close friends.
Before moving to Halifax County to settle into a life at the Boyd family farm, Drew tried his hands at a number of other occupations. His journey took him to Jackson, TN, Winston-Salem, NC, and Greenwood, VA where he managed construction and mastered carpentry skills. In Halifax County, Drew raised cows, pursued beekeeping, and became an avid gardener. He joined a number of local organizations, including the Ruritan Club and Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church where he served in leadership.
Wherever Drew went, he made lifelong friends. He had a natural way of bringing people together, and his kindness, humor, and authenticity, Drew left a lasting impression on those he met. Many of the friendships that he formed over the years remained close and meaningful friends throughout his life.
Family visitation will be held on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 PM at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston, Virginia followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM 0fficiated by the Rev. Jude Swanson. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that in lieu of sending flowers donations be made in memory of Drew to Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church 4231 Turbeville Road South Boston, VA 24592.
