Powell Funeral Home, Inc.On March 2, 2026 Halifax County lost one of its beloved optometrists, Dr. Clyde Franklin Peer at the age of 90. He was born in Wardensville, WV on August 21, 1935 to the late Elbert Clyde Peer and the late Pauline Heishman Peer. He was married fifty-two years to the late Barbara Kranwinkle Peer.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as Senior Warden and Junior Warden. Clyde was the salutatorian of his graduating class at Wardensville High School in Wardensville, WV (now called East Hardy High School). He attended Potomac State College (now University) in Keyser, WV on a baseball scholarship for his 4 year degree. He loved playing baseball for the Catamounts (mountain lion/cougar). Clyde went to the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL, (now called University of Illinois Chicago), worked as a valet at the famous UNO’s Pizzeria parking customers’ cars, and met Barbara while she was working on her nursing degree at the same college. His favorite story about being stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was that he prescribed General Westmoreland with his first pair of bifocal glasses. Dr. Peer enjoyed playing tennis, fishing and travelling, especially to the beach and his passing will leave a void in the hearts of his family, friends and his community.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Dr. Michael Conrad Peer and wife Aleacia of Halifax, Thomas Craig Peer of Camden, NC; one granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Peer Alberse (Drew) of Cary, NC.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Martha Jenkins officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday evening on March 20, 2026 from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home.
