Dennis Stern Obituary

Dennis Stuart Stern, 76, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on Monday, June 12, 2023, at University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born on July 23, 1946, in Denver, Colorado, he was the son of Jack and Belle Stern. Dennis earned a B.S. and M.B.A. from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Clinical & Organizational Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. While in graduate school, he met his future wife Catherine, with whom he enjoyed 45 years of love. Their daughter Jessica was born in 1990 in Los Angeles. For more than 30 years, Dennis worked as a management consultant.

Dennis retired from Amgen in 2009, and pursued independent management consulting thereafter. Dennis and Catherine lived in Washington, D.C., and moved to Charlottesville in 2022, to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law. Dennis loved spending time with his family, traveling, visiting museums, driving scenic routes in California while singing along with favorite musical artists, and hiking with their dogs. His volunteer service included helping out-of-work people develop job resumés, tutoring elementary school students in reading, and working on bicycle repair for children.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Catherine Gould Stern; daughter, Jessica Stern; brother, Charles Stern; and son-in-law, Gabriel Dayley.

A small funeral will be held for Dennis in Charlottesville, on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. A larger Celebration of Life in California in 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to World Central Kitchen (wck.org), 200 Massachusetts Ave NW, 7th Floor, Washington, DC 20001. Thanks for an absolutely wonderful ceremony. The thoughts shared by the three of you brought Dennis back to life in our minds and hearts. It made me realize; if I could have had an older brother, Dennis would have been my first choice. Love to all, John and Sally

My deepest sympathy to you. I only knew Dennis through the time we spent in the NNICU family waiting room hoping for our husband´s recovery. My family was pulling for him too. Prayers for your peace and be comforted by your memories.

Loved this man. A better natured soul does not exist. Catherine, and Jessica, I hope you are comforted by all the wonderful memories. And you will indeed remember him every time you hear a Joni Mitchell song. Smile when you do.
