To Shirley and all of Don's Family,
On behalf of Crozet United Women in Faith, our sincere, heartfelt sympathy is extended to you at the passing of your loved one and our dear friend, Don. Beginning in 2009, Don was a regular vendor offering his wonderful books and walking sticks at the UWF annual Christmas Bazaar each December. He only missed participating once or twice since 2009. Don was to be a vendor this December 2025, and he will be greatly missed. In his own words,"participating in the Christmas Bazaar was like spending the morning with old friends". We in Crozet will truly miss our dear, Christian gentleman friend, Don. He will remain in our hearts forever. Judy B. Hogberg, Christmas Bazaar Vendor Coordinator, Crozet United Women in Faith at Crozet United Methodist Church, Crozet, VA.

"Salt of the earth," springs readily to mind when think of Don Payne, I met him while volunteering last year at the Historical Society Barn. It was a true pleasure meeting him. He was very inventive in his approaches to solve problems - and he appeared to love solving problems. He gave me a hook to attach to a long stick to help bring down the branches for hard to reach fruit on my fruit trees. Don, you will be missed. Godspeed! My deepest condolences go out to your family and loved ones.

I never had the privilege of meeting Don, but I do have some of his publications. In reading his obituary, it´s clear that he lived a remarkable life and has earned the honor of crossing the river to rest in the shade of the trees. My condolences to all who were touched by his passing.

Steve Lee introduced Donni to me in 1969 as a new roommate, as we were all to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. Donnie knew how to meet and face challenges like no other person I have known. So, one summer he was off to install high tension power towers in northern Virginia as a lineman/iron worker. He had no experience but in some way or another convinced them to take him aboard. As I recall he did this work for three or more summers, while camping out on a lake somewhere in northern Virginia with his Collie named "Coalie". And, in the winters in the Richmond area, Donnie took on the task of being a salesman selling vacuum cleaners by appointment. Don was successful. Don was a man of detail as I recall. He was very contemplative about anything he did or said which is a most admirable trait of character. His successes are many as noted in his obituary touching lives, offering leadeship which again is a not so easy a task, but Donnie had that resource...confidence. And, there was one thing that must be mentioned about our mutual friend Steve Lee. Steve was having vision issues before he passed away and Donnie would go to take him shopping as Steve related to me but in those travels together Donnie was concerned about Steve's relationship to God. Donnie was discipling expressing his concerns for Steve's future when he left this world. I know from what Steve told me that Donnie's heart was right with God. God bless his family and his wife Shirley.
