Second only to his love of his family and fishing, Donovan Webster's passion was traveling the world, meeting people, and sharing their stories with others. Donovan was born on January 13, 1959, in Chicago, Ill. He attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill., and Kenyon College in New Gambier, Ohio, where he received a degree in English and developed a love for writing. Donovan's award-winning work was published in such periodicals as The New Yorker, National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, Outside, Vanity Fair, and many others. He also produced several books, including Aftermath: The Remnants of War, The Burma Road, and Meeting the Family. Donovan was a compassionate philanthropist, helping to create and build several organizations such as the Center for International Rehabilitation and the U.S. African Development Foundation. Donovan died on July 4, 2018, in Charlottesville, Va. He was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Webster. Don will be deeply missed by his wife of 26 years, Janet Webster; his son, James Webster; and his daughter, Anna Webster. He also leaves behind his loving father, Dr. James Webster Jr.; his sister, Susan Webster; his brother, John Webster; and a large number of family members and friends. A gathering for remembrance and celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at 4 p.m. at Olivet Presbyterian Church in Ivy.
