Doris Jean Norman Carter
Doris Jean Norman Carter, 92, formerly of Free Union, Va., passed away peacefully on Friday January 8, 2021, in Richmond. Born on April 18, 1928, in Seattle, Wash., she was the daughter of the late Stacy Wills Norman and Winifred Alice Salter and the sister of the late William Bruce Norman. Doris graduated from Mary Washington College in 1949, with a degree in Art History. She married Wesley Sterling Carter in 1950 and lived in Lincolnia, Va. before moving to Charlottesville in 1958.
Doris was an avid gardener, crafter and genealogist. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with Sterling by motor coach, visiting 49 states and Canada over a thirty-year period. They were members of several motor coach associations, including Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) and were founding members of The Wild Bunch. Doris and Sterling had many friends from all over the country who visited them in Free Union and together experienced many wonderful adventures. Doris grew in her relationship with Christ Jesus during her last years at Lakewood Manor in Richmond.
Doris was preceded in death by Sterling, who passed away in 2014. She is survived by son, Brian Alan Carter and wife, Cathey, of Del Mar, Calif.; son, Glenn Roland Carter and wife, Leslie, of North Garden, Va.; daughter, Denise Sharon Carter and fiancé, Doug McGlothlin, of Manakin Sabot, Va.; son, Gary Keith Carter and wife, Kristin, of Manakin Sabot, Va.; grandchildren, Ashley Carter Cain and husband, Adam, of Chandler, Ariz., Jon Carter and wife, Jacqueline, of Dublin, Calif., Adam Carter and wife, Lauren, of Lake Forest, Calif., Wesley Carter and wife, Erin, of Howardsville, Va., Gretchen Carter Bronson and husband, Jamie, of Fredericksburg, Va., Erin Frackleton of Washington, D.C., Conor Frackleton and wife, Alanna, of Minneapolis, Minn., Jesse McWilliams of Richmond, Va., Hannah Carter of Sarasota, Fla., and Heather Carter of Manakin Sabot, Va.; and great-grandchildren, Max, Alexa and Jaxon Cain of Chandler, Ariz., Savannah, Levi and Charlotte Carter of Dublin, Calif., Noah and Matthew Carter of Lake Forest, Calif., Piper and Lily Carter of Charlottesville, Va., and Nora and Roark Frackleton of Minneapolis, Minn.
The family would like to express their love and appreciation for Doris's beloved friend and caregiver, Vanessa Johnson of Richmond.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will have a private graveside service. The service will be recorded, and a viewing link will be provided for those interested.
