Douglas Stoughton Obituary

Douglas S. Stoughton of Topping, Va., formerly of Fluvanna County, passed away on February 5, 2023, at the age of 73 years old.

Doug was born on September 22, 1949, in Patterson, N.J. to Ralph and Patricia Stoughton and was raised on the family farm in Palmyra, Va. He shared many idyllic memories with his four siblings, Adele, David, Jack and Randy, and many friends in the fields, farms and backroads of Fluvanna County.

He later attended Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., from which he graduated in 1971 with a degree in Agriculture Education. He always spoke fondly of his time at Tech.

Shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life, Deborah Morris of Richmond, Va., whom he married December 23, 1972. Doug and Deborah raised their two beloved daughters, Mandy and Shannon, in Fluvanna County, where their lives were full with love, laughter and joy.

Doug's farming background contributed greatly to his passion and dedication to his 30+ years with Virginia Farm Bureau. In his retirement, he and Debbie enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Rappahannock River in Topping, Va., with their dear friend Whitey.

Doug loved walking, reading, photography, fishing and being in nature. Above all, he was a family man whose life centered on the care and comfort of his wife and children.

His smile was infectious, his eyes twinkled and his hugs were filled with warmth.

Doug will be deeply and sadly missed by his wife Debbie, of 50 years; his daughters, Mandy and Shannon; his sons-in-law, George Boneillo and Zack Royer, his four loving siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends.

Service arrangements will be made at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please donate to Virginia Agriculture in the Classroom. Virginia.agclassroom.org/donors/support/

I'm a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where Doug's father, Ralph, served as our organist/choirmaster many years ago. I am sorry to learn of Doug's passing. This morning in church, I asked for prayers of comfort for Doug's family.

I am so very sorry to hear of Doug´s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you. We grew up family friends and spent many dinners etc together. He was a very fine man and I pray for God´s love and peace to be with through these times ahead without him, but know that Fluvanna county shares your loss.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I worked with Doug at Virginia Farm Bureau for many years. I can still see him at annual dinner meetings or helping me with county leadership. My heart aches for your family. I understand your loss. Praying that our heavenly Father covers you with comfort and peace.
